Position: Pharmacy Technician I

Definition

Under clinical supervision of the Chief Pharmacist, is responsible for preparing medications for patient use, in accordance with standard departmental procedures.
This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt.

Essential Functions
  • Outpatient Pharmacy Care and Prescription Processing:
    The technician demonstrates customer service skills while communicating with staff and patients.
    • Working knowledge of the pharmacy management system, the electronic charting system, automated dispensing cabinets, and other technology utilized.
    • Accurately fills and batches prescriptions for subsequent checking by a pharmacist.
    • Effectively communicates with professionalism to staff and patients.
  • Patient Medication Counseling:
    Provides independent patient medication counseling for medication dispensed.
    • Verifies patient identification and verification of patient medication use.
    • Answers patient specific medication questions.
    • Elicits medication-related problems that may require a pharmacist consultation.
  • Supply:
    Performs inventory and makes order based on re‑order levels.
    • Prepares and submits order for review through use of the inventory management system.
    • Receives and stocks the daily order with appropriate documentation.
    • Assures that medication stocks are rotated and are stored under appropriate conditions.
  • Controlled Substances:
    Observes policies, procedures and guidelines with respect to controlled substance inventory.
  • Conducts unit inspections accurately and timely, and maintains records per policy.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
    • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC).
    • Knowledge of written prescriptions and pharmaceutical terminology (e.g., medication names, dosages and forms, etc.) in order to pull, process, fill, compound prescriptions, communicate with health care staff, etc.
    • Knowledge of computer usage to maintain and safeguard accurate records, in accordance with departmental needs.
    • Knowledge of weights, measures, and mathematical computations in order to process, fill, compound prescriptions, etc.
    • Knowledge of standard pharmacy policies and procedures relating to record keeping, receipt, checking, storage and delivery of medications.
    • Skill in properly storing and ordering medications including stock rotations.
    • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare personnel in order to provide quality care.
    • Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures and ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information.
    • Ability to use excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to manage multiple and diverse people and tasks in stressful situations.
    • Ability to work independently, take initiative and use good judgment.
    Education
    • High school diploma or GED required;
      Pharmacy Technician certification with the National Board of Pharmacy required;
      Arizona Pharmacy Technician license required.
    Experience
    • A minimum of one year pharmacy experience required.
    Equivalency
    • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position will be considered.
    Underfill Eligibility
    • An enrolled Community Member who closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
    • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre‑employment background/fingerprint check.
