Position OverviewThe City of Mesa Police Department’s Information Technology (IT) Engineer III class provides skilled technical services in support of installation, configuration, testing, integration, and ongoing support for City applications and infrastructure. This DBA role is part of the Data Services team responsible for the design, maintenance, and optimization of database systems and the Data Warehouse.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Work with the technology team to apply best practices and serve as a database expert on project teams for new implementations and upgrades.
- Participate in an on‑call rotation to resolve after‑hours issues with database availability, patching, and storage management.
- Administer Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, and Power BI.
- Perform routine database administration tasks such as running change scripts, granting security, migrating reports, restoring backups, and other server administration duties.
- Perform database administration functions including sizing databases, creating users, databases, schemas, roles, views, data dictionaries, indexes, batch processing jobs, procedures, and functions.
- Maintain user and system security for data integrity and coordinate with staff on requests and changes.
- Monitor database performance and optimize to improve efficiencies.
- Develop stored procedures, views, and functions for data access and reporting.
- Assist in the design, development, implementation, maintenance, and testing of database application systems, and troubleshoot performance and errors, including storage allocation requirements.
The ideal candidate will have strong professional experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Excel, data modeling, usability design, visualizations, unstructured information analysis, data warehousing, functional requirements analysis, and business analytics. Proficiency in administering Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, and Power BI is essential.
AdditionalPreferred Qualifications
- Experience with Power BI, SQL Server Management Studio, Data Management tools, ETL tools (FME, SSIS), metrics, reports, and dashboards.
- Comprehensive knowledge of IT concepts such as networking, server, storage, firewall, application architecture patterns, monitoring, security, disaster recovery planning, and user authentication.
- Intermediate to advanced SQL coding and data warehouse design/implementation skills.
- Experience with server management tools, Dev Ops, and scripting with Power Shell.

Minimum QualificationsAny combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field (e.g., Engineering, Geography) and 3‑5 years of computer systems experience in Application, Database, Desktop, GIS, Network, Security, Server, or Web Support.
Special RequirementsSuccessful candidates must pass background investigations through the City of Mesa Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
