Overview

Under limited supervision of the Fire Chief, the Assistant Fire Chief provides highly responsible and complex executive level support to the Fire Chief. May additionally be assigned to manage various divisions/sections or functions within the department. The position is responsible for oversight and compliance of divisions, as well as formulating policy, procedures, and recommendations for considerations by the Fire Chief. This is treated as an FLSA Exempt and considered a DRIVING position.

  • Supports strategic and tactical planning efforts, assisting with master planning initiatives to assure the optimal development and utilization of Department resources. Research, analyze and evaluate new service delivery methods, procedures and techniques.
  • Analyzes performance to evaluate service and productivity effectiveness; prepare recommendations and reports for the Fire Chief and Community Council. Develop intervention strategies when appropriate.
  • Provides effective personnel management and leadership to ensure a qualified and capable workforce, while promoting professional development opportunities to personnel. Ensures department management staff apply and maintain sound management principles through guidance, coaching and oversight.
  • Oversee major projects on behalf of the Fire Chief, as requested.
  • Oversee assigned Department Division(s) and the assigned corresponding Sections.
  • Attends regular and special board meetings and provides background information and research data to the command staff through personal and/or subordinate staff reports on plans, proposals, alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Conducts and/or participates in working meetings with a wide variety of individuals and groups; utilizes leadership, management, and interpersonal skills to make informed decisions, develop recommendations, and negotiate or resolve significant complex, sensitive, and often controversial issues.
  • Participate in the development, administration and management of the Fire Department budget; including forecasting, monitor and approve expenditures, and/or implement mid-year adjustments as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with local and regional partners.
  • Represents and serves on committees, task forces, and interagency coordinating groups regarding the fire department: presenting materials and reports to the Tribal Council and or committee.
  • May serve in the Fire Chief capacity, as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties that enhance and facilitate departmental operations.
  • Education & Experience

    A bachelor’s degree in Fire Service, Business Administration, or related field. Master’s degree or Chief Officer Certification and or training such as Executive Fire Officer – National Fire Academy, Chief Fire Officer Certification – Center for Public Safety Excellence, Commission on Fire Accreditation International, or related training preferred.

    • Five (5) years in public management (rank of Captain and above) with three (3) years as a Deputy Chief.
    • Must pass periodic and appropriate medical and/or physical examinations. Must also pass a pre-employment drug test.

    Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.

    Underfill Eligibility

    An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill. The capacity and willingness to meet and maintain excellent physical conditioning which may be needed when responding to major incidents and performing any task necessary, at any time and under any weather or hazardous conditions.
