ResponsibilitiesThe RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history, performs diagnostic tests, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, ensuring careful dosage checks, IV line management, therapy administration, observation recording, and consultation with physicians and other health‑care clinicians.
The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses, explain post‑treatment care, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self‑medication. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides and delegates as appropriate. The RN supports clinical knowledge advancement, precepts new hire staff and students, and assists staff in achieving competency skills. The RN continually enhances knowledge in nursing management and care of patient problems and conditions as required.
Functions
- Collect health data systematically, prioritize collection based on patient needs, involve the family, analyze assessment data, and use nursing diagnoses to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise appropriate patient care plans that are family‑centered, developmentally and age‑appropriate, and culturally relevant.
- Identify expected outcomes individualized to each patient’s health problems and develop plans of care that are evidence‑based, continuous, and family‑centered.
- Implement interventions in the plan of care, initiate treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures, and provide nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs.
- Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes, document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, monitoring data, and other relevant information in a retrievable form, and continually evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the care plan.
- Assess one's own nursing practice relative to professional standards, statutes, regulations, and policies, maintaining current knowledge and systematically evaluating practice quality.
- Integrate ethical principles into all practice aspects and enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs for specific populations.
- Collaborate with colleagues in professional development at institutional, local, regional, and state levels, contributing to peer relationships, preceptor and mentor programs, and fostering a quality practice environment.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care delivery, engaging patients, families, and other health‑care providers in care provision.
- Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, identify changes needed in nursing practice using research, and facilitate the adoption and adaptation of evidence‑based strategies to improve outcomes.
- Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost factors in planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources effectively and efficiently.
- Other / Certificate:
All diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5 or more years of registered nurse experience (direct patient care or indirect RN roles) at the time of hire.

All staff with direct responsibility for stroke patient care must refer to the addendum for stroke‑specific education requirements prior to start.

- Other: >10 months in med‑surg or acute specialty setting.

- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Certification in BLS training course and unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area.
