The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served.
The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and helps with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.
The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medication, careful checking of dosages, avoiding interactions; starting, maintaining, and discontinuing IV lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products; administering therapies and treatments; observing the patient and recording observations; and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.
The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home‑care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy.
The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegates when appropriate, supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hire staff and students, assists staff and students to seek and complete competency tasks, and continues to enhance knowledge in nursing management and care of patient problems as required.
The RN may continue to improve patient outcomes.
The RN collects health data systematically, analyzes assessment data, develops and implements patient plans of care that are family‑centered, developmentally and age‑appropriate, culturally relevant, and evidence‑based. The RN initiates treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures per standing orders, policies, and procedures. The RN provides multidisciplinary care, evaluates progress toward outcomes, documents interventions, evaluates quality and effectiveness of care, maintains current nursing knowledge, integrates ethical principles, enhances knowledge of culture and diversity, collaborates with team, engages in professional development, and participates in evidence‑based research and quality improvement.
EducationAll Diploma or ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5 or more years of RN experience at time of hire. Required Associates or Diploma in Nursing. All staff with direct responsibility for care of stroke patients should refer to the addendum for stroke specific education requirements prior to start. Required Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN).
ExperienceOther: >10 months in med‑surg or acute specialty setting. Required 1 year RN experience for all float positions.
License & CertificationsBasic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area. Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Arizona. Upon hire required national certification for unit‑specific patient population.
