The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and helps with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.
The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan, including activities such as administering medication, managing IV lines, administering therapies, observing the patient, and consulting with physicians and other clinicians. The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses, explain post‑treatment home care, diet, nutrition, exercise, and medication administration. The RN directs licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegates when appropriate, and supports clinical knowledge development.
Functions
- Collect health data systematically and prioritize based on patient condition.
- Analyze assessment data, determine diagnoses, and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an evidence‑based, family‑centered care plan.
- Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient’s health problems.
- Initiate treatments, medications, emergency, and resuscitative measures following standing orders.
- Provide nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs using a family‑centered approach.
- Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes and document observations and interventions.
- Continuously evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to enhance patient outcomes.
- Maintain current knowledge of nursing practice and related regulations; evaluate own practice against professional standards.
- Integrate ethical principles into all aspects of practice and enhance knowledge of culture and diversity needs.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care delivery.
- Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care and facilitate implementation of practice changes.
- Support research integration into practice and consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in patient care delivery.
All diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5+ years of Registered Nurse experience (direct or indirect RN roles). Required Associates or Diploma in Nursing. Bachelors in Nursing (BSN) required for other positions; preferred.
ExperienceOther >10 months in med‑surg or acute specialty setting. Required 1 year RN experience for all float positions.
License & CertificationsBasic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona required upon hire. Unit‑specific national certification required; additional specialty certification may be required.
