Job DescriptionSecurity and Safety Specialist
Location: Horizon High School
Duration: 9 months, 8 hours/day
Grade: 14, $15.94/hour
Type: Non-Interim Position
Purpose Statement: The job of Security and Safety Specialist is to provide support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for the safety and welfare of students, staff, and community members while on school grounds and in alignment with school and district policy and procedures.
Reports To: Site Administration
Essential Functions- Communicates safety and security policies and procedures to students, staff, and visitors to ensure understanding and maintain a positive campus climate.
- Monitors student behavior before and after school, during and between assigned periods, and at student events, and may supervise lunchroom, classrooms with substitutes, detention, open areas, athletic events, and other events as needed.
- Patrols school facilities (grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) to provide visibility, maintain safety and security, and promote a positive campus environment.
- Assists with the implementation of the school's emergency response plan in the event of a school emergency such as lockdown, evacuation, shelter in place, etc.
- Prepares written materials to document student behavior activities and provide written reference of activities.
- Provides traffic and parking control to maintain efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot.
- Refers incidents (e.g., personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations) to appropriate site personnel for follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security, and student safety guidelines.
- Responds to a variety of situations (accidents, injuries, vandalism, alarms, etc.) to take appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
- Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. to convey and/or gather information required to perform job functions.
- Supports and enhances campus culture through practices that encourage students to understand the impact of their actions, be reflective, and find ways to make amends.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit and the social‑emotional wellbeing of the campus.
- May assist or be assigned to other district campuses as needed.
- Participates in district/local in-service training.
- Attend district behavioral safety training for de‑escalation strategies.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Skills: Adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including software; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
Knowledge: Basic math; understanding written procedures and multi‑step written and oral instructions; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures.
Abilities: Scheduling activities; collating data; using basic job‑related equipment; flexibility to work with others; problem solving; adapting to changing priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; teamwork; setting priorities.
ResponsibilityResponsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; utilizing resources from other work units may be required.
Work EnvironmentPhysical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Job requires 35% sitting, 50% walking, 15% standing. The job may involve temperature extremes and exposure to risk of injury or illness.
