Position: Social Worker II (Child Protective Services)

Overview

Under general supervision from the Social Services Manager, performs professional social casework services in the Child Protective Services (CPS) program within the Social Services Department. Ensures quality, effective and efficient social services are provided to clients with a focus on Child Protective Services, child abuse, neglect cases and crisis emergencies.
This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Distinguishing Features

The Social Worker II (CPS) differs from other Social Worker II positions by focusing on child protection, child abuse, neglect and crisis caseloads involving the Community’s child and youth population.

Essential Functions
  • Responds quickly and within Community policy guidelines in crisis situations involving children in abusive/neglectful situations.
    • Investigates referrals of child abuse and neglect. Interviews and examines children for signs of abuse or neglect.
    • Works closely with team members and utilizes the “buddy system” to conduct investigations.
    • Works closely with law enforcement and court personnel. Conducts collaborative interviews with contacts to gather pertinent CPS related information.
  • Coordinates investigations with the Office of the Prosecutor, Salt River Police Department and the Office of General Counsel as needed.
  • Makes home visits or visits to other settings to investigate and evaluate circumstances of abuse and neglect.
    • Interviews other persons relative to the case being investigated.
  • Develops the basis for petition, conducts and documents home studies in preparation for court hearings.
    • Attends and testifies at court hearings regarding cases of abuse and neglect.
    • Prepares comprehensive reports of investigative findings that support recommendations for appropriate actions.
  • Plans and schedules activities and intervenes in crisis emergencies.
    • Rotates after‑hour investigative responsibilities with other team members.
  • Inputs data into the Management Accountability Information System (MAISE) and maintains accurate statistical data using the computerized database for easy retrieval. Maintains current and comprehensive case files that include assessments, case plans and other case file documentation. Prepares periodic reports from records as required.
  • Participates in training opportunities that enhance professional knowledge of tribal case management, child abuse and neglect.
  • Serves as a mentor to SRPMIC employees in the Social Worker I job class by attending court hearings, home visits or case staffing with them. Serves as a trainer for new staff. Tracks statistics and prepares financial reports as required.
  • Participates in weekly staff meetings and discusses issues and cases that require additional input and planning. Provides alternative solutions to issues to ensure the greatest benefit for the clients in accomplishing the program objectives.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental and program operations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Community laws, rules, regulations and standards that apply to public social service programs.
  • Knowledge of CPS policies, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of case management techniques and practices as well as crisis intervention methods.
  • Knowledge of social work principles and concepts.
  • Knowledge of social work methods and techniques, including group and individual counseling, crisis intervention, and referrals.
  • Skill counseling individuals, families and other groups.
  • Skill with case management including planning, scheduling and time management.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, other social work professionals, SRPMIC co‑workers, and Community officials.
  • Skill evaluating customer needs and utilizing SRPMIC resources or other appropriate referrals to meet client needs.
  • Skill dealing with sensitive and confidential personal issues and maintaining appropriate professional, confidential relationships.
  • Skill using the personal computer and related software including MS Office.
