Trumbull Corp is seeking proven field leaders to plan, direct, and coordinate daily grading and earthwork operations on highway and heavy civil construction projects. You will supervise crews and equipment, ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with plans and specifications, and drive production, quality, and schedule goals.
This is a hands‑on leadership role working closely with the Superintendent, Project Manager, survey personnel, subcontractors, inspectors, and utility representatives.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise and coordinate daily grading, excavation, embankment, subgrade, drainage, and site preparation activities for highway construction projects.
- Lead crews of operators, laborers, and teamsters - assign tasks, monitor performance, and maintain productivity throughout the workday.
- Read and interpret plans, profiles, cross‑sections, stakes, cut sheets, utility markings, and specifications to establish line, grade, slope, and elevations.
- Plan work activities with the Superintendent and Project Manager to meet production targets, sequencing requirements, and project schedules.
- Coordinate the efficient use of dozers, excavators, graders, rollers, loaders, skid steers, water trucks, and haul units.
- Verify grading accuracy, soil conditioning, moisture control, and compaction requirements per project and quality standards.
- Support layout and grade control using GPS/machine control, laser levels, survey equipment, and field measurements.
- Identify site constraints, utility conflicts, unsuitable soils, drainage issues, and safety hazards.
- Conduct daily pre‑task planning, job hazard analyses, and toolbox talks; enforce safe work practices, PPE use, and OSHA compliance.
- Maintain awareness of underground and overhead utilities; ensure crews follow locate markings and safe excavation practices.
- Inspect completed work and correct deficiencies to ensure compliance with contract documents, tolerances, and owner/agency expectations.
- Coordinate deliveries, trucking, subcontractors, and material staging to avoid downtime and maintain workflow.
- Track daily quantities, labor hours, equipment time, and production rates; complete reports, timecards, and field documentation accurately and on time.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 3‑5 years of grading, earthwork, or heavy highway construction experience, including prior crew leadership or foreman‑level responsibility.
- Strong knowledge of highway earthwork operations: excavation, fill placement, proof rolling, subgrade preparation, drainage, and compaction.
- Ability to read blueprints, grading plans, profiles, and specifications.
- Experience with line and grade control using survey stakes, laser, GPS, and/or machine control systems.
- Working knowledge of heavy equipment used in grading and earthwork operations.
- Understanding of OSHA safety requirements, trench/excavation safety, traffic control awareness, and utility protection practices.
- Ability to plan crews, equipment, and materials to meet schedule and production goals.
- Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
- Valid driver's license; ability to work extended hours, weekends, and travel to project locations.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Experience on DOT, Turnpike, municipal, or other public infrastructure projects.
