The teaching load for this position will be 3 courses (i.e., 9 total credits) per semester. There are two kinds of courses the selected candidate will teach. First, they will teach sections of PHIL 210:
Ethics, a core curriculum course taken by all undergraduate students at the University. Second, they will also teach at least one upper-level ethics course each semester. The topic for this upper-level ethics course will depend on the interests/expertise of the selected candidate and the programmatic needs of the department. For example, it could be (though needn't necessarily be) a course focused on an area of applied ethics (e.g., biomedical ethics, environmental ethics, technology ethics).
An exact teaching schedule will be determined once the position is filled, but it is likely the selected candidate will be assigned two sections of PHIL 210 and one upper-level ethics course each semester.
This position is sponsored through the University of Scranton's Ethics Across the Curriculum Initiative. In addition to fulfilling the above teaching responsibilities, the selected candidate will assist the coordinators of the Ethics Across the Curriculum Initiative with other activities associated with the Initiative. Such additional responsibilities may include, for example, participating in an interdisciplinary ethics-focused reading group, helping to organize one or two ethics-focused conferences, assisting some non-philosophy faculty in their efforts to integrate ethics into one of their courses, and leading a couple of faculty development workshops related to their areas of expertise in ethics.
The University of Scranton is a Catholic, Jesuit university with a philosophy department rooted in the history of philosophy and the philosophical foundations of the Catholic intellectual tradition.
