CLASS ASSIGNMENT:
Autistic support program at Priestley Elementary in the Shikellamy School District. The anticipated start date is August 4, 2026 for the 2026-27 school year.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
The Classroom Assistant reports to the classroom teacher and program supervisor, and in their absence to the Director of Special Education and Alternative Placement. If RBT certified, receives guidance from a BCBA.
JOB DEFINITION:
The Classroom Assistant assists Special Education Teacher(s) in teacher-supervised instructional and non-instructional tasks. The position is non-tenured and subject to annual review. Responsible for efficient performance of assigned activities below.
- Performs instructional and non-instructional activities as assigned by the teacher and program supervisor.
- Supervises pupils in the school and the community, as assigned.
- Utilizes positive behavior support strategies to effectively manage student behavior.
- Works as part of a team.
- Demonstrates competence and good judgment in dealing with physical/medical emergencies.
- Maintains updated records and completes paperwork, including progress monitoring.
- Utilizes technology.
- Collaborates with the IEP team to assist in developing an educational program focusing on academic, communication, and social/emotional skills.
- Inform the classroom teacher of any problems or needs of each family and child; utilizes support staff for teaching and program concerns.
- Attends and is punctual for staff meetings; notifies teacher or supervisor if unable to attend.
- Adheres to Federal, State, IU, District and other applicable procedures, policies, and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the program supervisor or designee.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of Special Education Competency Assessment checklist within 90 days of employment.
- Registered Behavioral Technician certification preferred; required if serving in RBT capacity.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility in adapting to varying student schedules and behaviors.
- Ability to accept cultural diversity and accommodate changes in caseload.
- Capacity to handle stressful situations with a professional attitude.
- Confidentiality regarding education programs, students, and parents; adherence to FERPA.
- Effective communication with colleagues, community agency personnel, and students.
- Positive, collaborative relationships; diplomacy; calm in unpredictable situations.
- Flexibility in adapting to student needs and various teaching styles.
- Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry), Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances; renewal per Act 153 (2014) / Act 15 (2015).
- Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate – minimum 3 hours every 5 years.
- CPR and First Aid training; recertification required.
- 20 hours of staff development activities related to assignment each school year.
- Sedentary: able to sit extended periods, occasional walking/standing, lift up to 50 lbs.
- Tolerance for bending, stooping, squatting.
- Participation in training on behavior prevention, de-escalation, safe physical management.
- Dexterity: finger movements, eye-hand coordination.
- Audio-visual within normal range with or without correction.
- Walk throughout all buildings, floors, grounds.
- Work site: primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure.
- Mental demands: steady response to unpredictable situations; multitask.
- Assist children with self-help skills.
- Travel to various work sites as needed.
- Full-time, non-exempt; 185-day schedule; follows assigned schedule.
- Attend some evening events/activities as appropriate.
- Must have transportation to work location(s).
- Attendance is required; absences must be approved by immediate supervisor.
- All property, intellectual property, materials, equipment, services developed as part of job are CSIU property.
- Employee must maintain confidentiality regarding clients, coworkers, programs; comply with state and federal laws.
- Adhere to professionalism code "Ambassadors Are Professionals, Too" and CSIU Service Standards 317-AR-1.
