This position supports the education work in both center‑based and home‑based services by implementing and supervising classroom and home visit activities. The Floating Educator works with typically developing children and children with disabilities, ensuring that regular education staff remain informed about the needs of children and families revealed during center‑based or home‑based services. The Floating Educator also shares responsibility for parent involvement, providing and modeling school‑readiness information and skills to parents.

The role may be assigned to various classrooms and home visits as needed for program operations.

Fundamental Duties/Essential Functions Program Development
  • Attend all required training and workshops.
  • Stay up to date on information pertaining to the needs of the children in the program, including Head Start Program Performance Standards, Head Start Act, OCDEL regulations and other applicable regulations.
  • Work as a team member with other education staff and parents to develop curriculum that meets individual school‑readiness needs.
  • Implement daily lesson plans and home visit plans, including updates to family/child information and planning for upcoming home visiting events.
  • Follow individual plans for each child, including identified needs and prescriptions for objectives and activities to meet established goals.
  • Schedule home visits and parent‑teacher conferences with families as required and document these events.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with respect to enrolled children, families and staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Prepare a safe, healthy learning environment for children that is developmentally appropriate and experientially based.

  • Preschool Program Implementation
  • Supervise all classroom/home visit activities, field trips, outdoor activities.
  • Plan and provide a developmentally and linguistically appropriate curriculum and experiences appropriate to the ages, languages and cultures of children served.
  • Direct any special needs or problems to the appropriate manager/specialist or supervisor.
  • Plan and implement learning experiences that advance the intellectual and physical competence of children, improving readiness for school by developing literacy, phonemic and numeracy awareness, language use, vocabulary, books appreciation and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Implement education/home visit lesson plans and daily programs for children based on observing and recording children’s interests and current levels of functioning. Align plans with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes and Framework and PA Early Learning Standards.
  • Support social and emotional development and provide positive guidance and discipline.
  • Maintain a commitment to professionalism and continue own professional development; base decisions on knowledge of early childhood theories and practices.
  • Supervise and provide nutritionally prepared meals with children to model good nutrition and proper social skills. Encourage children to serve themselves whenever possible.
  • Provide a stable classroom/home visit routine and environment.
  • Ensure a well‑run, purposeful program responsive to participant needs.
  • Screen, observe and document children as required.
  • Understand regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including universal precautions and prevention of contamination.
