Position: Tax Examiner 1

Overview

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (DOR) has an exciting opportunity available for a detail-oriented individual as a Tax Examiner
1. This role offers the opportunity to acquire technical tax knowledge and gain experience while contributing to a mission that supports public programs.

You will grow in a supportive environment designed to help you succeed and advance. The role focuses on learning how to examine and process individual tax returns to ensure they follow state laws and supports accurate and fair tax administration across the Commonwealth.

Responsibilities
  • Review Tax Returns:
    Examine individual tax returns and schedules for accuracy and proper calculations.
  • Assess Documentation:
    Review legal forms and related materials submitted with tax returns.
  • Request Information:
    Prepare and send requests for missing or unclear information needed to complete returns.
  • Correct Errors:
    Initiate transfer transactions when errors are identified in initial processing.
  • Respond to Inquiries:
    Provide verbal and written responses to questions from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Record Production:
    Prepare and submit production reports for completed work items.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Experience and Training:
    Two years of general office work; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Additional Requirement:
    You must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Legal Requirement:
    This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to IRS Publication 1075, which requires an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment, including criminal history checks and identity verification.
Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework:
    Part-time telework may be possible after successful completion of in-office training (6 months), subject to having a securely configured high-speed internet connection and an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If telework is not possible, you will report to the Harrisburg headquarters.
  • Salary:
    Starting annual salary for new Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employees is $40,685.00 (before taxes).
