Police Officer
Training level work in general duty police activities involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws, and the investigation of crimes.
Candidates receive formal training at the Police Academy and on‑the‑job experience preparing them for full patrol duties. Work is performed under the supervision of a police supervisor and requires exposure to uncontrolled and unpredictable conditions. The job requires frequent moderate physical effort.
Orientation and Evaluation ProcessThe Police Department conducts an orientation program that includes a Nelson Denny Reading Comprehension Test, a Physical Fitness & Agility Test, and assessments of overall fitness for duty. Candidates who pass all required tests may be admitted to the Philadelphia Police Training Academy.
Qualifications- Education equivalent to high school graduation or GED.
- Minimum age: 20 years at the time of appointment (entry to Academy).
- Must meet the physical and medical standards approved for the class.
- Valid Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers’ Certification must be obtained and maintained during employment.
- Valid Class A motor vehicle driver’s license issued by Pennsylvania (required within 60 days of establishing residency). A valid out‑of‑state license may be used until a Pennsylvania license is obtained.
- Additional preference points may be awarded for eligible veterans, legacy, bilingual fluency, national volunteer service, college coursework, or participation in the Police Explorers Cadet Program.
After successful completion of the Philadelphia Police Academy, the salary increases to $72,651.
