Position Summary

The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) serves as a key member of the intraoperative healthcare team, assisting the surgical team with tasks that promote patient‑ and family‑centered care. The CST is responsible for creating and maintaining a sterile field, anticipating the surgeon’s needs, and supporting decontamination and sterile supply areas while maintaining professional interactions with patients and staff.

• Interact with co‑workers, visitors, and other staff in alignment with Jefferson Health values.
• Recognize patients and their families or designated care partners, providing safe, compassionate, and coordinated care that respects personal preferences and cultural beliefs.
• Communicate and support the interprofessional team, patient, family, and care partners.
• Inspect the operating room (OR) for cleanliness and secure, set up, and prepare OR equipment, instruments, and supplies required for surgical procedures.
• Participate in team time‑out and actively advocate for patient safety and high‑quality care.
• Assist with gowning and gloving of the surgical team, including the surgeon.
• Assist with preparation of the sterile field, draping the patient, and maintaining sterile field integrity.
• Provide a thorough report to relief personnel on the status of the procedure, instruments, materials, and any other pertinent information to ensure a smooth transition during the surgical procedure.
• Count all sharps, sponges, and instruments with the circulating nurse before, during, and after the surgical procedure; follow the policy on how counts are performed and initiate corrective action when a count is incorrect.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Maintain supplies and equipment to ensure efficient unit operations.
• Help maintain a safe, neat, and clean environment to facilitate effective patient care in the operating room.
• Act as the primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed.
• Precept surgical personnel after transition of care.

• Education (Required): Graduate of a surgical technician training program.
• Experience (Preferred): Prior surgical technician experience.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required): Ability to convey respect and collaborate with patients, families, and care partners; advanced communication skills; knowledge of industry standards, policies, and procedures; understanding of physical environment management; awareness of patient risks and risk‑reduction strategies; proficiency with common healthcare equipment; competency in surgical assistance techniques; application of policies and procedures to maximize OR efficiency and productivity.
• Licenses and Certifications (Required): Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association.
• Ability to maintain a safe and clean operative environment and uphold the integrity of the sterile field.
