Essential Functions, Primary Responsibilities and Objectives:

Faculty/instructional staff must be effective in teaching and knowledgeable in subject matter as documented by appropriate professional credential(s)/certification(s), education, and experience in the designated content area. For all didactic, laboratory, and clinical instruction to which a student is assigned, there must be a qualified individual(s) clearly designated by the program to provide instruction, supervision, and timely assessments of the student's progress in meeting program requirements.

The Clinical Preceptor/Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supervising students at clinical sites to ensure completion of required surgical cases for the Surgical Technology Program, as assigned by program officials, while also supporting laboratory instruction by assisting with course activities and providing students with additional hands-on practice to enhance learning and promote course success.

This is a semester based, 24 hour/week non-tenure track position.

Essential Functions:
  • Collaborate effectively with Clinical Coordinator to ensure proper support of clinical rotations.
  • Ensures that each assigned student participates in the required number of cases and procedures to meet accreditation and certification standards.
  • Request resources needed for clinical practice and rotations.
  • Maintains collaboration and communication with clinical sites on a routine basis and is available when called upon to supervise clinical rotations on site.
  • Reports to the Surgical Technology Program Director on a weekly basis. Reports to the Clinical Coordinator daily. Keeps program staff informed of the progress of each student.
  • Maintains up to date records of each student's clinical rotations and evaluations. Submit records to Clinical Coordinator timely.
  • Develops positive working relationships with preceptors at each clinical site and keeps them informed of changing standards while maintaining professional behaviors.
  • Assists Instructor with preparation of labs, carrying out laboratory activities, practical examinations, and skills proficiency check-offs for various Surgical Technology classes and open lab hours as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the Surgical Technology profession, clinical skills, and educational methodology through continuing professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned including but not limited to CAAHEP accreditation requirements and community service.

  • Education:
    • Highest Academic Degree of Surgical Technology education, an Associate Level Degree, or education level needed to achieve Credentials of Certified Surgical Technologist.
    • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.
    Experience:
    • Have a minimum total of two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
    • College teaching experience in health care or related fields preferred.
    • Experience supervising and educating Surgical Technology students preferred.
    • Familiarity or experience with CAAHEP Accreditation requirements for Surgical Technology programs preferred.
