Superintendent – Maintenance I&C

Talen Energy is soliciting candidates for the I&C Maintenance Superintendent position at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station located near Berwick, Pennsylvania. The station is one of the largest dual‑unit boiling water reactor sites in the U.S., delivering approximately 2,700MW of electricity to the grid in northeastern Pennsylvania. It is situated less than 30mi south of Wilkes‑Barre, in the western edge of the Pocono Mountains.

Responsibilities

Accountable for all work activities in the Instruments and Controls (I&C) Maintenance Group in the most cost‑effective manner without compromising safety, ensuring compliance with Technical Specifications, Quality Assurance Procedures and NRC facility licenses. This requires:

Involvement in the planning and scheduling process to factor in field knowledge and experience.
Ensuring the most cost‑effective work strategy has been selected (e.g., contractor vs. in‑house labor, overtime reduction, shift strategy, crew mix, utilization of new technologies, products, tools or equipment).
Maintaining accountability and productivity at a high level.
On‑going involvement in training program requirements and assessments.

Accountable for long‑range work planning and organizational decisions for the I&C Maintenance section, initiating changes that increase effectiveness, reduce costs, interpret labor agreement issues, implement plant modifications to reduce maintenance costs, and promote internal progression line promotions for B/U personnel.

Manages and controls the production and outage efforts of the Instruments and Controls Maintenance area by assigning responsibilities to functional area supervisors.

Responsible for shop supervisors and technicians in the overall administration and control of the plant I&C Maintenance section. Program responsibilities include surveillance testing and preventive, predictive, planned and corrective maintenance for plant structures, systems and components. Accountability for initiating and implementing assigned modifications, procurement of materials and services, and periodic review of maintenance section instructions and procedures.

Establishes goals, trains and develops subordinates, provides technical and managerial expertise, and provides performance review and feedback. Offers career guidance to maintain competency standards.

Participates in the SSES Nuclear Emergency Response Organization.

Assists in the management, control and assessment of the Maintenance department programs and personnel.

Ensures maintenance work activities are properly planned and executed under the work management program process and schedule.

Promotes teamwork among crews, peers, and management team through in‑field observations, coaching and reinforcement of expectations.

Helps identify training development performance gaps and assures integrity of technical training programs by acting as chair and meeting quorum requirements.

Provides input for development of budgets and maintains oversight of expenditures not to exceed budgets.

Supports and manages the Corrective Action Program within the maintenance department.

Basic Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
Seven years of responsible nuclear power plant experience or applicable industrial experience, with a minimum of one year of nuclear power plant experience. Up to two years of the remaining experience may be fulfilled by satisfactory completion of academic or related technical training on a one‑for‑one time basis. Applicants should have familiarity with non‑destructive testing, craft knowledge, and understanding of electrical, pressure vessel and piping codes.
Extensive knowledge of all maintenance programs, job requirements, procedures, work activities and plant systems.
Thorough knowledge of labor agreements and administrative requirements.
Thorough knowledge of all planning/scheduling requirements, information management systems and man‑hour estimating programs.
Must live within 55 minutes of the plant and be able to qualify and fulfill Emergency Response Organization duties.
