Position: 911 Dispatch Trainee

TELECOMMUNICATOR I - ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pass the training program milestones, benchmarks, and exams and demonstrate skills in training and live dispatch environments.
  • Achieve and maintain certifications in ETC, EMD, CPR, PEMA, NIMS (IS100, IS200, IS700, IS800) online courses, NCIC/CLEAN, HAZMAT Awareness, and Missing and Exploited Children online courses within established benchmarks.
  • Complete monthly continuing education.
  • Attend monthly shift meetings.
  • Apply policies, procedures, and protocols correctly.
  • Operate telephone and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and other communications equipment.
  • Proficient in back-up methods including cards and telephone.
  • Receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, emergency service providers, and other public safety agencies requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services.
  • Enter, update, and retrieve information from computer systems.
  • Make quick and accurate decisions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
  • Maintain a positive customer service attitude with the public, public safety providers, and other agencies.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all times.
  • Assist in maintaining the computerized Master Street Addressing Guide (MSAG) and emergency database by collecting information and relaying issues to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Perform additional assigned duties as directed.
TELECOMMUNICATOR II, III, IV - ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Includes Telecommunicator I responsibilities.
  • Achieve sign-off on Fire/EMS and Police training benchmarks and exams, demonstrating skills in training and live dispatch environments.
  • Operate a variety of communications equipment including radio consoles, telephones, CAD systems, and other technical equipment.
  • Use back-up methods: cards, radio, telephone, and paging.
  • Coordinate and assign field units to incidents based on nature, priority, and available resources.
  • Track and document radio activity, incident information, and unit status.
  • Identify, analyze, and disseminate pertinent information to field units; evaluate updates and disseminate to field units.
  • Coordinate, assign, and monitor use of multiple radio talk groups.
  • Monitor box alarms on the simplex system.
  • Access and operate local and state databases to verify information and disseminate to law enforcement officials.
  • Operate playback audio recorders (radio and telephone) when applicable.
  • Evaluate information to identify potential escalation and perform status checks for scene and responder safety.
  • Make quick and accurate decisions.
  • Assist other dispatchers as needed when not occupied with primary duties or if occupied with lower priority duties.
  • Perform checks on vehicle registration, driver’s licenses, wanted or missing persons, and property; disseminate information to local law enforcement.
  • Comply with FCC regulations applicable to public safety radio.
TELECOMMUNICATOR V - ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Includes Telecommunicator I–IV responsibilities.
  • Sign off on Records (SCOPE); complete written and simulation exams within the set time frame.
  • Enter, modify, and cancel data in databases with high accuracy; retrieve, interpret, and disseminate information to appropriate law enforcement officials.
  • Perform checks on vehicle registrations, driver’s licenses, and on requests for wanted/missing persons, stolen guns and stolen articles; these requests require a high level of confidentiality.
  • Receive and send teletypes through CLEAN and NCIC systems.
  • Access information through Citrix, AOPC, JNET, and other databases and maintain certification to use those systems.
  • Maintain departmental files, records, and office equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • At least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A combination of education and experience indicating the knowledge, skills, and abilities required at entry.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment exams, background investigations, and drug and hearing screenings.
