Position Overview
The Licensed Practical Nurse role at the Department of Corrections offers a chance to make a real difference every day. Responsibilities- Vital Sign Checks:
Check and record vital signs to support accurate assessment of inmate health. - Medication Tasks:
Prepare and administer medications under proper supervision and document treatments. - Direct Care Support:
Assist inmates with daily living activities and hygiene to maintain their basic physical needs. - Emergency Response:
Provide first aid, CPR, or AED support during urgent medical situations. - Record Management:
Review, update, and maintain electronic health records and required reports. - Infection Control:
Follow established procedures to keep treatment areas clean and safe.
- Full‑time employment, 40‑hour work week.
- The Department of Corrections is staffed by three (3) 8 or 10 hour work shifts that cover the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year: 1st shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM; 2nd shift: 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM; 3rd shift: 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM.
- Work hours to be determined.
- Rotating days off, weekends, and holidays.
- These positions are eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
- Telework:
You will not have the option to telework. - Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,558.00 (before taxes).

- This position requires active authorization to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Pennsylvania.
- All employees possessing an active temporary practice permit must obtain licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse within the one (1) year period defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
- PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
- If you are within 60 days of completing a licensed practical nursing program approved by the State Board of Nursing, you are eligible to apply. At the time of appointment you must show proof of possession of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Licensed Practical Nurse license.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
- Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) – 711 available for hearing and speech disabilities or other individuals.
