Job Overview

Several open positions are available in the Daniell laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania in applied plant biology or biotechnology. Ongoing research projects include antiviral proteins made in plant cells to neutralize human or animal viral diseases. For project details see publications on neutralization of Coronaviruses (
Biomaterials 288: 121671, 2022;
Pharmaceutics 17: 12, 2025), Herpes or influenza viruses (
Molecular Therapy 33: 184-200 (2024)), or Human Papilloma viruses (
Scientific Reports 16: 7886, 2026). Additionally, other ongoing projects on diabetes include bioengineering of marker-free lettuce to produce oral insulin (
Biomaterials 293: 1221420, 2023), or oral GLP-1RAs (
Plant Biotechnology Journal 24: 3158).

Research Focus

Laboratory skills and conceptual understanding suitable for open positions include microbiology (culturing of bacteria, yeast), plant biology (in vitro tissue culture, plant growth in the greenhouse), and protein biochemistry (enzyme assays, Western blots, ELISA). Because several products made in plant cells are advanced to clinical trials, accuracy in measurements, reproducibility, and documentation are required. New employees will be trained in FDA documentation, double verification of results (dosage, stability, efficacy, potency), and handling instruments (pipette or equipment calibration, documentation).

Responsibilities
  • Perform microbiological culturing of bacteria and yeast.
  • Conduct in vitro tissue culture and greenhouse plant growth.
  • Execute protein biochemistry assays including enzyme assays, Western blots, and ELISA.
  • Maintain accurate experimental documentation and perform double verification of results.
Qualifications
  • Prior training in plant biology, microbiology, or biochemistry with an M.S. or Ph.D. degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy, reproducibility, and documentation.
  • Experience with calibration of pipettes and laboratory equipment.
