Job Summary
A research technician position is available in the Folkert lab in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. The candidate will collaborate with the Principal Investigator, students, residents, and graduate students to study the immune response to peritoneal surface malignancies, including appendix cancer, colon cancer, and peritoneal mesothelioma. The role involves routine laboratory work, hands‑on animal studies, and data analysis, with opportunities for publication and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Job Responsibilities- Conduct laboratory experiments and enter findings into computer systems.
- Analyze experimental results for conformity to specifications and generate preliminary figures for manuscripts.
- Process and ship samples, including collecting blood or tissue specimens and processing them for downstream applications such as cell culture, RNA extraction, sequencing, and flow cytometry.
- Maintain a detailed log/database of collected specimens.
- Maintain and passage cell cultures; optimize novel in vitro culture systems such as slice culture and organoid models.
- Perform murine tumor transplant studies, including tumor volume measurements and drug treatments.
- Provide scientific and technical guidance for ongoing projects.
- Maintain organized laboratory records, inventory of supplies, and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Collaborate closely with lab members and the Principal Investigator on projects.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science degree.
- 0 to 1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prior wet‑lab experience is advantageous.
- Ability to work independently after appropriate training and supervision in basic laboratory techniques and safety.
- Willingness to comply with background checks and grant‑funding contingencies.
- Background checks may be required after a conditional job offer is made.
- This position is contingent upon grant funding.
