We are currently seeking a skilled Boiler Operator to join our facilities team on a college campus.
Position SummaryThe Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of campus boiler systems and related mechanical equipment. This role ensures uninterrupted heating and hot water services across campus facilities while maintaining compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The ideal candidate is dependable, mechanically inclined, and experienced in operating commercial or institutional boiler systems.
Responsibilities- Operate, monitor, and maintain boilers, pumps, valves, chillers, and related mechanical systems
- Perform routine inspections of boiler equipment and utility systems to ensure safe operation
- Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels to identify system irregularities or malfunctions
- Conduct preventive maintenance and minor repairs on boiler and mechanical equipment
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls and troubleshoot equipment issues promptly
- Maintain accurate operating logs, maintenance records, and compliance documentation
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, state boiler regulations, and campus safety standards
- Coordinate with maintenance staff, contractors, and campus leadership as needed
- Assist with seasonal startup and shutdown procedures for heating systems
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe mechanical room environment
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid Boiler Operator License or Stationary Engineer License preferred, based on state/local requirements
- 2+ years of experience operating commercial, industrial, or institutional boiler systems
- Knowledge of HVAC, steam systems, water treatment, and mechanical equipment
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Basic computer skills for logging maintenance records and work orders
- Ability to work independently and respond effectively during emergencies
- Must be available for rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as needed
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and move throughout campus facilities for extended periods
- Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work in mechanical rooms with exposure to heat, noise, steam, and varying temperatures
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach overhead regularly
- Must be able to safely use hand and power tools, gauges, and testing equipment
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations and equipment failures
