Description of Work

This position focuses on maintaining and repairing a wide range of equipment used in transportation operations. It supports the safety and readiness of vehicles and machinery across the agency. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Repair:
    Perform mechanical repairs on cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment.
  • Preventative Care:
    Complete maintenance tasks including diagnostics, tune‑ups, and component adjustments.
  • State Inspections:
    Conduct official inspections and complete all required records and paperwork.
  • Safety Compliance:
    Follow proper safety procedures, report hazards, and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Diagnostic Work:
    Use diagnostic tools to identify mechanical problems and determine repair needs.
  • Team Support:
    Assist coworkers with major repairs and demonstrate techniques as needed.

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full‑time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
  • Shifts may vary seasonally/due to weather and/or based on operational needs.
  • Telework:
    You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:
    Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,492.00 (before taxes).

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey‑level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
