Position: Corrections Counselor 1

Position

As a Corrections Counselor 1 with the Harrisburg Community Corrections Center (CCC), you will take part in important work that supports reentrants as they return to the community. This position offers hands‑on experience in case management, counseling, and group facilitation. You will encourage reentrants to build life skills, strengthen relationships, and work toward personal goals. of Work

This beginning-level professional position helps reentrants develop important life skills through counseling, structured activities, and planned casework within the Harrisburg Community Corrections Center. The role focuses on building confidence, supporting goals, and strengthening connections to community resources. As a Corrections Counselor 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Goal Guidance:
    Assist reentrants in setting and achieving goals related to employment, education, housing, and personal development
  • Crisis Support:
    Provide assistance in urgent situations, conduct assessments, and make appropriate referrals
  • Workshop Leadership:
    Lead group sessions, discussions, and seminars that promote pro‑social behavior and positive decision making
  • Cognitive Techniques:
    Use structured intervention tools to help reentrants practice problem‑solving and practical skills
  • Community Outreach:
    Coordinate resources, participate in meetings, and promote understanding of the CCC mission
  • Case Documentation:
    Maintain accurate electronic case files and record reentrant progress according to required standards
Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55
  • Telework:
    No telework option available
  • Salary: starting salary may be non‑negotiable in some cases

Qualifications Required Experience, Training & Eligibility
  • Three years and six months as a corrections officer, and 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or
  • A bachelor’s degree including 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree or credits
Special Requirements
  • You must obtain Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certification within two months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position
Other Requirements
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required
  • You must meet the PA residency requirement
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions
Legal Requirements
  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements
Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS)
  • 711 (hearing and speech disabilities or other individuals)
