Position: Equipment Operator A - Wernersville State Hospital

Responsibilities

This position supports the safe and efficient operation of Wernersville State Hospital by operating vehicles, equipment, and tools used for transportation and grounds work. The role helps maintain daily services and ensures that important tasks are completed reliably. As an Equipment Operator A, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Operation: Operate buses, trucks, vans, tractors, and other equipment to support hospital transportation needs
  • Grounds Maintenance: Use mowers and related equipment to maintain safe and well‑kept outdoor areas
  • Material Transport: Move consumers, employees, supplies, food, and equipment both on and off the hospital grounds
  • Equipment Care: Complete safety checks, clean vehicles, and perform minor maintenance tasks to keep equipment in good condition
  • Snow Removal: Operate plows, blowers, and de‑icing equipment to maintain safe travel during winter conditions
  • General Labor: Load materials, clean outdoor areas, and assist with tasks that support facility upkeep
Work Schedule
  • Full‑time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with a 30‑minute lunch. Weekend shifts are required every third or fourth week. Your schedule may change based on operational needs.
  • Overtime:
    As needed and subject to emergency call‑in
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $36,108.00 (before taxes).
Qualifications Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
  • Six months experience in the operation and maintenance of large vans, buses and single‑chassis trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more;
    or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training
Special Requirement
  • You must have possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.
Condition of Employment
  • This position requires the selected candidate to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within the probationary period, in order to meet operational needs.
Other Requirements
  • You must meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Legal Requirements
  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act
    • Under the Act, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police and FBI clearance.
