Overview
Build your future as a Tunnel Maintainer with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. You will help manage tunnel operations, assist during incidents, and keep traffic moving safely. Be part of a team that plays a vital role in supporting Pennsylvania roadways.
Responsibilities- Tunnel Maintenance: Perform cleaning, repairs, and upkeep of tunnel structures, buildings, and grounds.
- Incident Response: Assist motorists, remove debris, and manage traffic disruptions during emergencies.
- Operational Monitoring: Observe tunnel conditions, detect hazards, and track vehicle and air quality concerns.
- Equipment Operation: Use towing devices, wash trucks, and other tools to support tunnel functions.
- Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and support a safe work environment.
- Preoperational Checks: Inspect equipment and complete required forms before beginning work.
- Full‑time employment, rotating 24/7 operations.
- Work hours are varied and are based upon operational considerations. Shifts can range from the following: 9:30 PM – 5:30 AM; 5:30 AM – 1:30 PM; 1:30 PM – 9:30 PM, with a 30‑minute lunch.
- Travel, overtime, and shift work required.
- Telework: Not available.
- Salary: New employees begin at an annual salary of $52,097 (before taxes).

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing, roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- Successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on the first day of employment.
- Within the probationary period, obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
- Within the probationary period, obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
