Position
Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' understanding and appreciation of the art of music, including listening to a wide range of musical genres, periods, and styles. To identify, promote, and develop each student's talents in vocal and instrumental musical expression.
- Develop and administer music education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction.
- Develop a balanced music program and lessons to organize class time so that students have adequate preparation and rehearsal time.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student musical learning and progress, modifying instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including special needs students; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, as appropriate.
- Plan, coordinate rehearsals and direct students in musical programs and performances outside the classroom.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge and stay current by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies; establish and maintain behavior standards for practice, rehearsal, and performances.
- Coordinate with other professional staff, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select and requisition appropriate music supplies and instruments, maintain inventory records, and ensure equipment is in good working order.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other district office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to play an instrument or instruments, conduct students in playing instruments as needed (instrumental music).
- Ability to instruct voice (choral/voice music).
- Ability to instruct singing, harmonization, and chorus as needed.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Work in standard office and school building environments.
Certification / License- Delaware State Certification as a Music Teacher. Information about Delaware Certification/Licensure can be found on the Delaware Department of Education website:
- Successful candidates must provide evidence of PRAXIS II scores or a valid out‑of‑state teaching license. Applicants with less than 1 year of experience will receive an Initial License and must pass a Performance Assessment by the end of their 2nd year. Candidates with one completed year but less than 4 years experience will receive an Initial License and are not required to pass a Performance Assessment if they have a current out‑of‑state license.
