Special Education Teacher – Autism – West Seaford Elementary – for the 2026‑2027 School Year
Essential Job Functions:
- Applies strategies and techniques to foster independence, self‑reliance, and social skills.
- Delivers lesson plans and presents learning materials during instructional exercises.
- Monitors students’ progress regarding individual education plans and goals.
- Monitors students and/or small groups with autism in a variety of instructional activities following instructional personnel’s presentations.
- Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in developing appropriate behavior.
- Uses a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instruction level of children with autism.
- Monitors students during classroom activities, recesses, and field trips.
- Operates and assists students in operating instructional aids, media, and computer‑assisted instructional equipment.
- Maintains an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
- Assists students with basic personal‑care activities such as dressing, toileting, catheterization, feeding, and grooming as needed.
- Uses good judgment regarding appropriate actions to assist injured or ill students and to assist in medical emergencies.
- Assists students on and off the bus as needed.
- Administers a variety of tests and records results.
- Attends specialized training as required.
- Behavior‑management strategies and techniques for students with autism.
- Demonstrates a patient, receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups.
- Recognizes and responds to emergencies pertaining to varied student medical conditions promptly.
- Assists students with basic personal‑care activities such as dressing or toileting as needed.
- Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and procedures to enhance a positive educational environment.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other district office administrators as directed by the Superintendent.
EquipmentUses standard office equipment such as computer, printer, copy, fax machines, and telephone.
Travel RequirementsTravels to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of school curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of data systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self‑evaluation related to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
- Develops and adheres to Individualized Education Plans outlining necessary supports, accommodations, and goals for an individual child.
- Meets with parents and staff regarding the plan and makes necessary adjustments throughout the year.
- Works with children ranging from mild to severe disabilities, using specialized techniques to help them achieve goals.
Works in standard office and school building environments.
Qualifications Profile Certification / License- Delaware State Certification as 1573 Teacher of Students with Autism or Students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities.
- Subject or area certification also required.
- Category certificate may not be issued alone; at least one subject or area certification must be held.
- Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Exceptional Children/Special Education or a related discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
