Position: 2026-2027 School Year - Special Education Teacher - Autism - Central Elementary

Special Education Teacher – Autism – Central Elementary –  School Year

Position:
Special Education Teacher specializing in autism to be located at Central Elementary. The role involves supporting students with autism from grades 3 through 5.

Essential Job Functions
  • Apply strategies and techniques to foster independence, self‑reliance, and social skills.
  • Deliver lesson plans and present learning materials, and conduct instructional exercises.
  • Monitor students’ progress regarding individual educational plans and goals.
  • Monitor individual students or small groups of students with autism during a variety of instructional activities.
  • Use positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in developing appropriate behavior.
  • Use a variety of instructional materials and learning aids tailored to the instruction level of children with autism.
  • Monitor students during classroom activities, recess, and field trips.
  • Operate and assist students in the operation of instructional aids, media, and computer‑assisted instructional equipment.
  • Maintain an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
  • Assistance with basic personal‑care activities such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and grooming when needed.
  • Use good judgment to assist injured or ill students and respond to medical emergencies.
  • Assist students on and off the bus as needed.
  • Administer a variety of tests and record results.
  • Attend specialized training as required.
Additional Autism Specific Abilities
  • Behavior‑management strategies and techniques for students with autism.
  • Demonstrate patience and a receptive attitude toward students of varied ages.
  • Recognize and respond quickly to emergencies related to student medical conditions.
  • Assist students with basic personal‑care activities as required.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional materials and procedures to enhance a positive educational environment.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or district administrators.

Equipment

Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephones.

Travel Requirements

Travel to district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiation based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of the school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer networking systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Develop and adhere to an Individualized Education Plan outlining necessary supports, accommodations, and goals.
  • Meet with parents and staff regarding the plan and make necessary adjustments throughout the year.
  • Work with children whose disabilities range from mild to severe, using specialized techniques to help them reach goals.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Work in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
  • Delaware State Certification as 1573 Teacher of Students with Autism or Students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities.
  • Subject or area certification required; at least one subject coverage.
  • Successful candidates must provide evidence of successful PRAXIS II scores or a valid out‑of‑state teaching license.
  • Motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Exceptional Children/Special Education or a related discipline.
Additional Requirements

Graduate with a bachelor’s or master’s in special education with a concentration in autism and severe intellectual disabilities, or meet equivalent requirements as specified by the state. Include at least fifteen credits in specialized professional development areas such as Autism, Instructional Methods, Functional Communication, Applied Behavior Analysis, and Practicum.

Position Details
  • Duration: 10 months (188 days), pro‑rated to start date.
  • Full time.
  • Eligible for state‑share benefits.
  • Pension eligible position.
Minimum Qualifications

Teacher certification under Delaware Code Title 14 Section 1500. High school diploma or GED required for all employees.
