Position: Special Education Teacher - Autism (High School) - for the 2026-2027 School Year

Special Education Teacher – Autism (High School)

For the  School Year

Essential Job Functions
  • Applies strategies and techniques to foster independence, self‑reliance, and social skills.
  • Delivers lesson plans, presents learning materials, and conducts instructional exercises.
  • Monitors student progress regarding individual education plans (IEPs) and goals.
  • Monitors individual students and/or small groups of students with autism in various instructional activities.
  • Uses positive reinforcement and other appropriate techniques to assist in appropriate behavior development.
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and learning aids appropriate for students with autism.
  • Monitors students during classroom activities, recess, and field trips.
  • Operates and assists students in the operation of instructional aids, media, and computer‑assisted instructional equipment.
  • Maintains an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
  • Assists students with basic personal care activities such as dressing, toileting (including catheterization), feeding, and grooming as needed.
  • Uses good judgment to assist injured or ill students and in medical emergencies.
  • Assists students on and off the bus as required.
  • Administers various tests and records results.
  • Attends specialized training as required.
Additional Autism Specific Abilities
  • Behavior management strategies and techniques for students with autism.
  • Demonstrates a patient, receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups.
  • Quickly recognizes and responds to emergencies related to student medical conditions.
  • Utilizes instructional materials and procedures to enhance a positive educational environment.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, district administrators, or Superintendent.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction.
  • Knowledge of school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws about education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to evaluate performance and pursue professional growth.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships.
  • Develops and adheres to Individualized Education Plans outlining supports, accommodations, and goals.
  • Met with parents and staff regarding the plan and adjusts as needed.
  • Works with children with a range of disabilities, using specialized techniques.
Qualifications Profile
  • Delaware State Certification as 1573 Teacher of Students with Autism or Students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities.
  • Subject or area certification required; at least one subject or area certification must be held.
  • Successful candidates must provide evidence of successful PRAXIS II scores or a valid out‑of‑state teaching license.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Exceptional Children/Special Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
Additional Requirements
  • Graduating with a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a major in special education and concentration in autism or severe intellectual disabilities from an NCATE specialty organization or state‑approved program.
  • Or graduating with a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a major in special education plus completion of at least fifteen credits of professional development focused on autism and severe intellectual disabilities.
