Material Handler
Aerotek is hiring Material Handlers in Sussex County, DE! This is a day shift position offering weekly pay.
The Material Handler supports daily operations within a fabrication and metal manufacturing environment by safely moving raw materials and finished products throughout the facility. This role focuses on efficient material flow, accurate handling, and maintaining a clean, organized work area. The position is ideal for someone who is mechanically inclined, experienced with sit-down forklift operation, and comfortable performing physically demanding work in a fast-paced shop setting.
Responsibilities- Operate a sit-down forklift to transport raw materials, components, and finished products throughout the facility.
- Move, load, unload, and stage metal materials and fabricated parts to support production and shipping activities.
- Operate an overhead crane to safely move structural steel and fabricated components, with training provided as needed.
- Supply production personnel with the materials and components required to maintain continuous workflow.
- Read and use a tape measure to verify dimensions and confirm material specifications prior to staging or movement.
- Assist with inventory organization, material tracking, and inventory control activities.
- Support shipping and receiving functions, including packing, order pulling, and material handling for outbound and inbound orders.
- Use RF scanners or similar tools to scan, track, and record materials as they move through the facility.
- Perform routine inspections of forklifts, overhead cranes, rigging, and other material handling equipment to identify basic maintenance needs or safety concerns.
- Handle rigging tasks associated with lifting and moving structural steel and heavy fabricated parts in a safe manner.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, including regular housekeeping in material storage and staging zones.
- Follow all company safety procedures, manufacturing best practices, and shop guidelines when operating equipment and handling materials.
- Work collaboratively with machine operators, welders, and other shop personnel to coordinate material flow and support production schedules.
- Perform general labor duties related to material handling and shop support as needed.
- Previous experience operating a sit-down forklift in an industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse environment.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret a tape measure for verifying dimensions and material specifications.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working around fabrication, metalworking, and manufacturing equipment.
- Experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, metal shop, or industrial setting.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in a fast-paced shop environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong attention to detail when handling, staging, and tracking materials.
- Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to established safety procedures and best practices.
- Basic understanding of material handling practices, including safe loading, unloading, and staging of metal products.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with material handling in a structural steel or metal fabrication shop.
- Experience in shipping and receiving, including packing and order pulling.
- Familiarity with inventory control processes and material tracking systems.
- Experience using RF scanners or similar technology for inventory and order processing.
- Exposure to overhead crane operation and rigging for lifting heavy materials (training provided for the role).
- Comfort performing general labor tasks in support of shop operations.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with machine operators, welders, and other skilled trades in a job shop environment.
The facility consists of three buildings on-site and a small office area at the front. The shop is not temperature controlled, so working conditions reflect seasonal weather variations typical of an industrial environment.
