School Nurse – Floating (PreK – Grade 12) – Temporary
Position
Purpose:
To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, management and referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students, aiming to minimize absences due to illness, maximize educational opportunities, and create a healthy school climate.
- Collaborate with health care providers, students, parents, school district staff, and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining a comprehensive school health program.
- Collect health development data of students for compliance with state immunization regulations and Board policies.
- Conduct school programs of immunization, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing.
- Perform nursing assessment for ill or injured students; provide first aid, nursing care, intervention, and referrals.
- Evaluate and modify nursing care plans as necessary.
- Implement Board policy regarding exclusion and readmission of students with infectious diseases.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with state and federal law.
- Develop individual health care plans with specific goals and interventions for students’ IEPs.
- Implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health and prevent illness.
- Serve as a member of school health teams (e.g., Crisis Teams, PPT, Section 504).
- Provide guidance, counseling, and health education to students, parents, and employees.
- Report to parents, school district personnel, clinicians, and agencies to meet student health needs.
- Contribute to nursing and school health through research, including narrative and statistical reports.
- Provide medical assessment to school district employees as requested.
- Notify relevant persons or agencies of student injuries or illnesses per Board policy.
- Collaborate with parents, students, and staff to interpret health assessments.
- Comply with all HIPAA rules.
- Follow district procedures when nursing coverage is insufficient.
- Identify needed health accommodations for students in the Seaford Comprehensive Program.
- Outline and evaluate health-related components of IEPs and 504 Plans for program students.
- Perform other related tasks assigned by supervisors or administrators.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, illnesses, injuries, nutrition, and related areas.
- Ability to diagnose and provide care for ill or injured students.
- Ability to convey appropriate medical information to school staff and medical professionals.
- Basic arithmetic skills for position requirements.
- Proficiency with personal computers and office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Outlook, email).
- Problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work with diverse groups, including students with special needs.
- Ability to follow oral and written orders and coordinate work with principals, teachers, and others.
- Ability to describe orally and in writing school health services and concerns.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and other contacts.
- Adhere to all professional safety standards and practices in nursing, as required by federal and state law and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
- Frequent travel between schools may be required.
- Work in a standard school building environment.
- Exposure to body secretions, blood‐borne pathogens, medication, and various illnesses and diseases.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Current Registered Nurse license recognized by the Delaware Board of Nursing.
- Valid CPR and AED certification.
- Completion of 90 clock hours of training approved by the Department within two school years of hire, covering standards of practice, care coordination, leadership, quality improvement, and community/public health.
- Minimum of three years of supervised clinical nursing experience.
- Registered professional nurse (R.N.) licensed in Delaware.
- Temporary position ending on June 30.
- 10 month, 188 day employment (prorated to start date).
- Full‑time.
- Eligible for State Share benefits; pension eligible.
- High school diploma or GED required for all employees.
