Accounting Controller

The Accounting Controller oversees the financial and accounting operations, ensuring accurate, timely, and organized financial records. Responsibilities include AP, AR, payroll coordination, banking, reconciliations, job costing, financial reporting, cash flow, and month-end/year-end close. The Controller is responsible for maintaining strong checks and balances, internal controls, and SOPs to minimize errors, ensure accountability, and provide management with reliable financial information. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, analytical, accountable, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced electrical contracting environment.

Accounting

& General Ledger
  • Oversee daily accounting operations and maintain accurate general ledger records.
  • Review transactions for proper coding, documentation, and accuracy.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and promptly correct errors.
Accounts Payable
  • Oversee AP, including invoice review, coding, approvals, vendor credits, and payments.
  • Reconcile vendor accounts and monitor AP aging and cash flow.
  • Maintain appropriate payment controls.
Accounts Receivable & Collections
  • Oversee customer payments, deposits, reconciliations, and AR.
  • Monitor past-due accounts and coordinate collection efforts.
  • Maintain documentation for collections and lien deadlines.
  • Resolve customer account discrepancies.
Job Costing & Contract Accounting
  • Monitor labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and other job costs.
  • Review job profitability and investigate discrepancies.
  • Ensure billings, change orders, credits, and job costs are accurately recorded.
Financial Reporting
  • Prepare and/or oversee monthly:
    Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, AP and AR Aging, Past Due Reports, Job Profitability, Revenue and Gross Profit Analysis, Budget-to-Actual Reporting
Monthly Financial Reports

Monthly financial reports are due to management no later than the 15th of the following month, unless otherwise directed.

Month-End & Year-End Close
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Complete and review bank, credit card, loan, vendor, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Ensure revenue and expenses are recorded in the proper accounting period.
  • Coordinate with the company CPA and outside accounting professionals as needed.
Banking & Cash Management
  • Oversee company bank accounts and monitor cash flow.
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting and financial planning.
  • Ensure deposits, transfers, and other banking transactions are accurately recorded.
  • Maintain appropriate controls over company funds.
Payroll
  • Coordinate payroll processing and review payroll for accuracy.
  • Reconcile payroll-related accounts and ensure payroll liabilities are properly recorded.
  • Work with management and payroll providers to resolve discrepancies.
Internal Controls & Checks and Balances
  • Establish and maintain effective accounting controls and approval procedures.
  • Ensure proper documentation, reconciliations, and separation of duties.
  • Identify and prevent duplicate payments, missed billings, incorrect postings, and unauthorized transactions.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve accounting procedures.
SOPs & Process Improvement
  • Create, maintain, and update accounting SOPs.
  • Ensure procedures include appropriate checks and balances and can be followed by another qualified employee when needed.
  • Identify and improve inefficient or error-prone processes.
  • Train accounting personnel on established procedures.
Accounting Systems
  • Maintain accurate accounting information across company accounting and operational systems.
  • Ensure information flows accurately between systems.
  • Monitor system access and controls.
  • Assist with system integrations, automation, and process improvements.
CPA, Tax & External Relationships
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for the company CPA, tax professionals, banks, auditors, and other financial professionals.
  • Provide accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with tax filings, financial statements, audits, and other accounting requirements.
Management Support & Financial Analysis
  • Provide ownership with accurate and timely financial information.
  • Analyze financial results, margins, expenses, and cash flow.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities.
  • Recommend ways to improve profitability, cash flow, and financial controls.
Additional Responsibilities
  • From time to time, you may be asked to assist the general contracting business as an accounting consultant with accounting, financial reporting, job costing, reconciliations, and other accounting-related needs as requested by ownership.

Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree, Acct/Fin or related Experience in the electrical, construction, contracting, or service-based industry Experience with Quick Books Desktop Experience working with field-service or construction-management software Experience with construction billing, retainage, change orders, and collections Experience working directly with business owners and outside CPAs
