Lead Design Engineer – Mechanical Flight Controls

Location:

Seal Beach, California. This position is fully onsite and part of the Out‑of‑Production Mechanical Systems Design Engineering team under the Out‑of‑Production Chief Program Engineer office. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the continued safety and reliability of existing Boeing commercial aircraft through design, analysis, and support of flight controls, primary flight controls systems, and high‑lift systems.

Responsibilities
  • Act as Responsible Engineer on the Continued Operational Safety Program (COSP) and Safety‑Related Problem (SRP) projects.
  • Support BCA Production, BGS Modifications, Boeing Converted Freighter program, Engineering changes for OoP aircraft, and BGS Spares (ELRs, SDTs, interchange abilities).
  • Provide design solutions to the Service Engineering team for BCS and other fleet issues.
  • Participate in troubleshooting in‑service issues and perform new detail design of aircraft components such as gearboxes, cable system components, pilot controls (column, wheel, rudder pedals, switches, etc.), torque tubes, linkages, ball‑screws, sensors.
  • Engage in design and analysis of Flight Controls and Mechanical Systems, including Primary Flight Controls (pilot controls, elevators, horizontal stabilizers, rudders, ailerons, spoilers/speed‑brakes) and High Lift Systems (leading‑edge flaps, slats, trailing‑edge flaps).
  • Collaborate with Aerodynamics Performance, Structures, Flight Deck Crew Operations, Electrical Systems, Systems Stress, Customer Services, Factory and Flight Line Operations, Supplier Management, Airplane Safety, and others.
  • Conduct design reviews as SMEs, formulate path‑forward, prepare technical presentations for executive review boards.
  • Define verification methods, coordinate with suppliers, participate in component, system‑level, and airplane‑level testing.
  • Participate in certification activities with regulatory agencies.
  • Travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.
Requirements – Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or equivalent non‑U.S. qualifications.
  • 14+ years of experience in related engineering roles, specifically in Mechanical Flight Controls within the aerospace industry and in commercial airplane programs.
  • 5+ years of experience using CATIAV5, ENOVIA, and/or DELMIA.
  • 5+ years of experience with a commercial aircraft program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 20+ years in Mechanical Flight Controls or related roles in aerospace, with credentials such as ODAE‑UM, BDE, or FAA DER.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and experience presenting to senior leadership.
  • Strong collaborative skills across multiple team functions.
  • Experience reviewing and approving Service Bulletins.
  • Willingness to expand into technical areas without prior experience.

Pay & Benefits
  • Pay range: $182,750–$247,250, based on experience and market.
