About Monterey Audubon Society

Monterey Audubon Society (MAS) is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting birds and wildlife and inspiring people to care for the natural world of the greater Monterey Bay region. MAS’s work includes education, community science, and inclusive access to nature, and is supported by a strong volunteer and member base.

Position Overview

The Volunteer & Community Engagement Manager plays a key role in advancing MAS’s mission by coordinating volunteers, supporting field trips and outreach programs, and strengthening community engagement. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position requires strong time management skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently.

This position is well-suited for an experienced professional in environmental education for all ages, nonprofit programming, volunteer coordination, or community engagement who is interested in contributing to and growing with a small, mission-driven organization.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and support MAS’s volunteer program, including recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, training, and communication
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for volunteers, fostering a welcoming and inclusive volunteer culture
  • Collaborate with ED, board members, committee chairs, and volunteer leaders to support volunteer engagement and program needs
Field Trips & Programs
  • Coordinate and support MAS’s field trips and educational programs with staff, contractors, and volunteer leaders
  • Lead or support programs and outreach activities as needed
  • Assist with basic program logistics and materials to ensure events run smoothly
Outreach & Community Engagement
  • Represent MAS at outreach events and help deliver educational presentations for diverse audiences
  • Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations and community groups
  • Collaborate with staff and board leadership on special projects related to organizational growth, as capacity allows
Job Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in volunteer coordination, community engagement, nonprofit programming, or environmental education
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently, set priorities, and take initiative
  • Experience leading groups in outdoor, educational, or community settings
  • Demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive, welcoming environment and build a strong sense of community among volunteers, partners, and participants
  • Ability to safely lead outdoor field trips on uneven terrain for up to three hours, with intermittent walking and stopping; reasonable accommodations may be available to support individuals with disabilities in performing the essential functions of the role
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel between program sites; a valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record are required
  • Successful completion of a background check prior to the start date
Highly Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of local birds, natural history, and environmental issues
  • Experience with CRMs (Little Green Light, Wix, etc.)
  • Experience with Google Suite
  • Full-time: 40 hours per week, non-exempt
  • Evening and weekend hours required for field trips, programs, and outreach events
  • Hybrid environment – Work is a combination of remote and in-person engagement. The position requires regular attendance at field trips, outreach programs, and other events throughout Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties. This role requires the ability to travel as needed to support program activities and responsibilities.
Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to safely maneuver on uneven terrain, stand and walk for extended periods during outdoor programs, and occasionally lift or carry up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.

Compensation
  • $27–$32 per hour, commensurate with experience.
  • Reimbursement for approved travel and program-related expenses
