As a Commercial HVAC Commissioning and Service Technician, you’ll step in after installation to make sure systems operate exactly as designed. Your focus: start-up, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing service for commercial and industrial HVAC equipment—delivering reliability, comfort, and efficiency for every client.
A day in the role
- Arrive on site to bring a newly installed system to life—verifying operation, tuning setpoints, and documenting results.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance that extends equipment life and optimizes efficiency.
- Diagnose and correct issues such as electrical faults, refrigerant leaks, and airflow imbalances.
- Confirm controls and safety devices function as specified and meet code and company standards.
- Collaborate with project managers and installers to resolve post-install issues quickly and effectively.
- Communicate clearly with customers about performance, recommendations, and service needs.
- Capture thorough records of work performed, test outcomes, parts used, and adjustments made.
- Stay current on HVAC technologies, diagnostic tools, and energy-efficient best practices through ongoing training.
Travel This position requires between five and fifteen percent travel, primarily within the greater Portland area. Travel may include overnight stays. All business travel expenses are reimbursed in accordance with company policy.
What you bring
- 4+ years in commercial HVAC service or maintenance; installation experience is a plus.
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification (required).
- Proficiency with HVAC systems, controls, and post-install troubleshooting.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, schematics, and manufacturer specifications.
- Excellent communication skills and a customer-first mindset.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Comfort working on rooftops, in mechanical rooms, and in outdoor conditions.
- EPA Universal with 06A/LEB (Limited Energy/Electrical Basic) required; capable of performing electrical work associated with HVAC/R systems, including installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of electrical components; working on both low-voltage and line-voltage systems; and handling commercial HVAC electrical work such as equipment wiring with no limits on voltage, phase, or amperage for licensed electricians.
Compensation For this role, the anticipated hourly pay range is $40 – $70 USD, depending on qualifications and experience. Johnson Barrow also provides a comprehensive benefits package and reimburses business travel expenses per company policy.
