Position: Project/Program Manager I (SDA)

Special Duty Assignment (SDA) Project/Program Manager I (PPM I) – Engagement Strategy Team, Rail Division

King County Metro Transit's Rail Division is seeking a Special Duty Assignment (SDA) Project/Program Manager I to help lead events and activities such as Take Our Children to Work Day and Transit Appreciation Week, and shape future employee engagement within the Rail Division.

This position is available only to current King County Metro employees in the Rail Division who have successfully passed their probationary period.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Engagement Strategy Team in advancing the Rail Division’s strategic priorities of fostering a culture of care, expanding operations, ensuring a safe operating environment, and strengthening partnerships.
  • Lead the planning and facilitation of events focused on employee engagement, appreciation, and recognition.
  • Ensure event‑related AV technical needs are fully tested and operational.
  • Proactively plan events, including leading committee meetings, assisting with budgets, working with vendors, coordinating with the Rail Organizational Strategy & Administration teams, and being on‑site during event execution.
  • Conduct direct in‑person outreach and use communications strategies to advertise events and reach the frontline workforce.
  • Gather ideas for future employee appreciation events and activities.
  • Collaborate with the Rail Division’s Internal Communications Team on engagement events.
  • Partner with colleagues across King County Metro, including project managers and communications specialists from different sections.
  • Work with the Organizational Strategy & Administration Unit teams (Data Analysts, Project/Program Managers, Continuous Improvement Specialists, etc.) on projects impacting operations and efficiencies.
  • Represent the Engagement Strategy Team during events, activities, and daily operations, collecting and responding to employee feedback.
  • Plan and facilitate on‑site tours of Sound Transit, King County, and community partners interested in the Rail Division.
  • Coordinate quarterly job shadowing of frontline workforce for Engagement and Performance and Strategy teams.
  • Collaborate with the Engagement Strategy Team to write program proposals, event or project after‑actions, and define goals and scope for future engagement activities.
  • Support logistical components of the employee recognition program, including creation of plaques and awards and presenting awards to winners.
  • Assist with other projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Commitment to building a culture of care, equity, and safety within the Division.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, Word, Teams).
  • Enthusiasm for supporting employees within King County Metro, specifically the Rail Division.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn project management tools and strategies.
  • Experience or willingness to learn event‑planning, including drafting budgets and tracking priorities.
  • Knowledge of and comfort with assessing, troubleshooting, and managing AV equipment.
  • Comfort leading discussions with employees from across the Division.
  • Flexibility to shift priorities as needed.
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong writing skills for communications, project planning, and report‑writing.
  • Problem‑solving skills and openness to new approaches.
  • Willingness to perform other duties as assigned.
  • Self‑motivation and experience working independently.
  • Comfort with ambiguity in a fast‑paced environment.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office tools to manage work plans or projects.
  • Experience planning events or activities for large groups.
  • Experience generating budgets and tracking expenditures.
  • Experience drafting reports or other written documents.
Working Conditions &

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to adjust working hours for early morning or late evening engagement events.
  • Ability to travel between work locations in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
