Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, it is the only National Cancer Institute–designated cancer center in Washington. The center has a global leadership record in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy, and COVID‑19 vaccines. It operates eight clinical care sites that offer medical oncology, infusion, radiation, and proton therapy, and has network affiliations with hospitals in five states.

The fully integrated research and clinical teams aim to discover new cures and make life beyond cancer a reality.

About the Position

The Herbold Computational Biology Program in the Public Health Sciences (PHS) division seeks a senior Research Administrator (RA). Research administrators in the program support faculty in pre‑ and post‑award management, regulatory compliance monitoring, and general day‑to‑day lab operations. The RA will work part‑time on campus and remotely.

Key Responsibilities
  • Budget/Fiscal Support: Participate in strategic planning, develop, monitor, track and project budgets for a complex portfolio of projects with multi‑variable aspects; develop and run reports; identify issues and recommend solutions; customize report formats for broad audiences; independently determine proper expense placement and correct errors.
  • Funding Source Administration: Lead and provide strategic guidance on grant submissions and post‑award activity; work with faculty on response strategies; complete all non‑scientific and technical steps of submissions; review budgets, identify discrepancies and advise PIs on resolutions.
  • Regulatory Support: Prepare, consult, and advise PIs on non‑scientific portions of regulatory applications/submissions; identify missing components and resolve issues; advise on center‑wide policy changes; serve as central contact for questions and solutions.
  • Administrative Support: Identify and prioritize administrative needs; coach lower‑level staff; oversee project management and occasional event planning; communicate with other departments on behalf of PIs; resolve discrepancies with stakeholders.
  • Translational Data Science Integrated Research Center Administration: Oversee design, launch, and administration of diverse funding mechanisms; lead end‑to‑end project management of training and collaboration initiatives; develop and refine project‑management workflows and governance; track budgets, resource allocations, and funding timelines; coordinate with finance and leadership.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree or four years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of three years managing federal and/or non‑federal sponsored research.
  • Experience creating and executing strategic plans.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to appropriate resources.
  • Multi‑project grant experience with a wide variety of funding sources.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret regulations, determine impact, and manage change.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years as a research administrator with principal investigators or academics.
  • Five years of relevant experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Working knowledge of Excel formulas and Pivot Tables.
  • Knowledge of enterprise software systems.
  • Ability to tailor communications to specific audiences.
  • Ability to navigate complex internal systems and departments.
  • Basic budgetary knowledge, including reconciling and reporting budget information.
  • Basic accounting terminology knowledge.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory guidelines such as IRB, IACUC, MUA.

Annual base salary range: $93,163 to $139,714, with pay based on experience and qualifications. Fred Hutch is not currently sponsoring most H‑1B visas; candidates with an existing H‑1B sponsored by another organization and currently in the U.S. may be eligible.
