Superintendent I Summary

Mortenson is currently seeking a Superintendent I (Building Site/Civil) that will be responsible for coordinating, planning, and supervising assistant superintendents, contractors, and craft activities in a particular area of discipline, while developing and enhancing customer relationships through excellent service.

Responsibilities Site & Civil Construction Leadership
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee mass grading, excavation, backfill, and erosion control activities to support accelerated site readiness milestones
  • Lead installation of underground utilities including storm, sanitary, water, ductbank, and associated structures
  • Coordinate building foundations, slabs-on-grade, and exterior concrete in alignment with vertical construction sequencing
  • Manage site access, haul routes, laydown areas, and logistics plans across a multi-building campus environment
  • Partner with building superintendents to ensure smooth handoff from civil/site scopes to vertical construction
Planning, Scheduling & Coordination
  • Develop and manage short-interval plans, including three- and six-week look-ahead schedules for civil scopes
  • Ensure materials, equipment, and inspections are planned and available to meet schedule commitments
  • Review civil drawings, specifications, and contracts for constructability and completeness
  • Coordinate with design engineers, survey, and project engineering to resolve discrepancies and field conditions
  • Lead daily huddles, weekly coordination meetings, and site planning sessions for civil operations
Supervision & Team Development
  • Supervise project partners, craft foremen, and crews performing civil and site work
  • Interview, hire, transfer, and dismiss craft team members as required by project needs
  • Coach and mentor assistant superintendents and craft team members, supporting skill development and career progression
  • Track labor hours, productivity, and progress through proper task coding and field reporting
Safety, Quality & Risk Management
  • Provide visible leadership and accountability for safety, quality, environmental, and compliance standards
  • Identify and mitigate site risks related to soil conditions, utilities, weather, and sequencing
  • Proactively address unfavorable working conditions and drive continuous improvement in site operations
Collaboration & Culture
  • Build strong working relationships with internal teams, trade partners, inspectors, and clients
  • Lead by example, promoting inclusive behaviors, open communication, and continuous feedback
  • Effectively work with team members across diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and organizational levels
Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, or 10 years of relevant trade experience
  • Minimum 5 years of construction management experience, with emphasis on site/civil or heavy civil work
  • Experience with earthwork, underground utilities, concrete foundations, and site logistics preferred
  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex work areas within a fast-paced project environment
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and planning skills
  • Basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Strong communication, active listening, and customer service skills
  • Ability to interpret and apply Mortenson policies and procedures
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 100%

The base pay range for this role is $114,000 - $167,100. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
