Position Description
The work is performed according to supervisory instruction or established procedures. The employee will operate assigned vehicles and equipment. The position works with crews on major paving projects and small repairs such as utility cuts, potholes, and berms. The employee assists the skilled Sr. Raker on paving crews, responds to emergency winter weather, windstorms, and civil unrest.
Position OverviewSDOT seeks a Maintenance Laborer for the Asphalt Paving team.
Responsibilities include:
- Raking, shoveling rock, and lifting heavy objects.
- Assisting operators during breakouts and grading.
- Responding to voids around the city.
- Setting up traffic control plans and emergency response; comfortable driving in snow and ice.
- Back filling utility cuts in streets and sidewalks; preparing subgrade for concrete.
- Establishing line and grade, performing rough and final grading, sidewalks, driveways, and curbs. Includes measuring, layout, saw cutting, assisting contracted saw cutters, cleaning tools and forms, joining, and constructing wooden forms.
- Calculating and procuring materials needed for tasks.
- Supporting department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.
- Assisting skilled trade personnel in coordinating and performing skilled work; assisting in maintenance, repair, and construction; preparing walks and streets for asphalt and concrete paving operations.
- Documenting materials used, employee timesheets, and job square footage limits.
- Planning or assisting in planning for materials, equipment, and staffing for work assignments or areas.
- Driving pickup trucks, motorized equipment, snowplow, and sander in winter conditions.
- Maintaining routine records and reports.
- Performing related duties of comparable level/type and lower-level duties of Utility Laborer and Laborer.
- One year of experience in general laboring/manual work involving construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of public facilities.
- Combinations of education, training, and experience evaluated on an individual basis.
- Strong candidates may have: one‑year experience in concrete construction; experience working in a multi‑cultural workplace with a diverse customer base; ability to obtain a flagger card within six months; knowledge of the Right of Way Restoration Rules; knowledge of in‑street manual processes; knowledge of cross slopes for sidewalks and ADA ramps; understanding of SDOT Safety Policy.
- May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods.
- Frequently required to lift objects up to 50 pounds, occasionally more.
- Occasional handling or work with toxic/hazardous substances.
- Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
- Current Washington State driver’s license.
- Flagger certified (or ability to obtain within six months of hire date).
