Position: Construction & Maintenance Project Lead (SW Region)

Construction & Maintenance Project Lead – Southwest Region

Location:

Olympia, WA

The Construction & Maintenance Lead plans, coordinates, and organizes construction and maintenance projects in the Southwest Region, operating out of Olympia and covering a wide geographical area from Beacon Rock State Park to Sequim Bay State Park. The lead directs new construction, renovation, remodeling, repair, inspection, and maintenance of State Parks buildings, facilities, grounds, equipment, and vehicles, and may supervise up to two (2) C&M Leads, four (4) C&M Project Specialists, and additional staff.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as leader and direct work of two or more journey‑level trade employees and work crews.
  • Coordinate, lead, and train crews and Park staff in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Complete preventative and deferred maintenance projects requiring journey‑level skills.
  • Perform journey‑level work in carpentry, masonry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, welding, and equipment operations.
  • Lead planning of preventative and deferred maintenance projects, including estimating materials, equipment, and workforce.
  • Inspect work to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Plan, propose (including permitting and budgeting), and provide written documents.
  • Recommend maintenance work and consult with supervisor.
  • Respond to and repair emergency water, wastewater, and other specialized system issues.
  • Respond to area park maintenance emergencies and urgencies.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules, precautions, and equipment protocols.
Required Qualifications
  • Option 1:
    Two (2) years as a Construction & Maintenance Project Specialist and:
    • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
    • Valid unrestricted driver’s license (except corrective lenses).
    • Class A CDL with tanker endorsement obtained within 12 months of employment.
    • First Aid & CPR certification obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • Option 2:
    Six (6) years of advanced level experience in two or more construction/building trades (e.g., building maintenance, repair, remodeling, construction duties, mechanical/machinery) and:
    • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
    • Valid unrestricted driver’s license (except corrective lenses).
    • Class A CDL with tanker endorsement obtained within 12 months of employment.
    • First Aid & CPR certification obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • Two (2) years of technical or vocational training or education in a building/construction trade may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Washington State Parks or a similar parks and recreation entity.
  • Advanced level experience driving and operating a variety of vehicles and light to heavy equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with regular and specialized hand and power tools.
  • Advanced technical knowledge in construction, installation, and problem‑solving impacting agency facilities, sites, and systems.
  • Experience reading and understanding schematics and blueprints.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Advanced project management experience coordinating with stakeholders, vendors, and contracts.
  • Intermediate knowledge of building codes related to safety, repair, and maintenance of facilities.
  • Experience organizing and leading employees in project completion, including time management, multi‑tasking, and communication.
