Senior Construction Manager

Join us as we grow our construction management team! Our Facilities Engineering and Science Section (FESS), within the Solid Waste Division (SWD) of King County, is recruiting for a senior construction manager (Engineer III classification) in our new Construction and Asset Management Unit (CAMU). This is a great opportunity to apply your construction management, engineering and/or project management experience to help shape the future of construction management in our division!

As a senior construction manager (CME III), you will join SWD's owner's representative team, providing construction leadership, oversight, and coordination to support the successful delivery of capital projects. You will work closely with construction contractors, consultant construction management firms, engineering design firms, project managers, project engineers, and SWD stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contract requirements, quality standards, and project objectives.

This position will serve as the construction manager lead for construction projects at SWD's eight (8) Recycling and Transfer Stations (RTS) and closed landfills throughout King County. While utilizing multiple construction management work order contracts, you will oversee construction inspections, consultant contract management, project documentation, construction compliance, and commissioning activities. Projects will vary in size and complexity and may include major equipment replacements, significant infrastructure repair by replacement, and the construction of a new RTS, and development of a new permanent facility.

You will also contribute to pre-construction planning, utility coordination, constructability reviews, and permitting coordination. During the dry season, the majority of your work week will be spent at various RTS sites throughout King County, with a small amount of time available for remote work. During the wet season, you can expect to work in person at various SWD locations an average of three days per week, with the remaining time available for remote work.

Job Duties

What you will be doing:

  • Oversee multiple construction management consultant work order contracts which support project progress and scheduling, construction BMP adherence, project inspections, sampling, and testing of constructed materials, facilities, equipment, and machinery installed under the SWD construction contract
  • Manage construction management consultant contract and invoices; review RFI's, project meeting minutes, submittals and shop drawings for conformance with contract plans and specifications.
  • Assist project team with contract change order preparations, review and negotiations.
  • Support the implementation of a program for commissioning facilities and equipment, ensuring asset data collection, including review and interpret engineering design drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with acceptable construction methods.
  • Provide direction and support construction managers for daily activities to meet project delivery goals.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications you will bring:

  • Progressive experience in civil engineering, construction inspection, construction management or equivalent training including individual course work, certifications and/or field experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, engineering details and specifications and be able to relate them to specific construction project experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively direct and coordinate work as both the owner's rep and primary contact between contractors, construction management professionals, and stakeholders.
