Summary
The Exhibit Developer supports the mission of The Museum of Flight by designing, developing, and creating engaging, educational, and visually appealing exhibits and experiences. This collaborative role involves researching topics, writing content, and designing both graphic and digital elements. The Exhibit Developer works closely with the Lead Developer and other team members to create exhibit components, including graphics, video programs, and interactive elements, while ensuring all content meets museum standards.
Responsibilities also include producing exhibit materials such as storylines, scripts, labels, artifact lists, and video assets. The Exhibit Developer may collaborate with specialists, curatorial staff, and external contractors to select content, conduct research, and document oral history videos. Additionally, the role may require participation in committees, professional groups, and representing the museum at external conferences.
- Conduct in-depth research on exhibit topics to ensure accurate and engaging content.
- Conduct research on best-in-class forms of storytelling and presentation to ensure exhibits fulfill “experience” criteria.
- Write clear, informative, and accessible exhibit text, including labels, scripts, and narrative content.
- Design and develop graphics for both physical displays and digital media.
- Develop innovative techniques to communicate exhibit topics including interactive exhibits.
- Collaborate with the exhibits team, experience team, curatorial staff, and other museum departments to integrate content and design seamlessly.
- Select and organize artifacts, photos, film, video, and historical information to tell complex histories from inclusive and diverse perspectives.
- Work with the creative team to ensure exhibits align with museum goals, standards, and visitor experience objectives.
- Assist with exhibit production, installation, and ongoing updates or improvements.
- Ensure all exhibit content is accurate, well‑researched, and supports the museum’s mission and educational goals.
- Collaborate and support the creation of oral histories and other video content with curatorial, AV services, and other exhibit staff.
- Participate in meetings, brainstorming sessions, and project reviews to develop and refine exhibit and experience concepts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, journalism, museology, science, or another related field. A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Five (5) years’ work experience in research, graphic design, writing, and editing, preferably in a museum environment.
- Knowledge of and skills with graphic design software, video production process and editing, and physical and digital media.
- Knowledge of aviation and aerospace, preferred.
- Skilled in research, writing, and content/story development.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills and can work with diverse individuals and departments.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office and the Adobe Creative Suite in particular.
- Able to prioritize and complete assignments with little direct supervision.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with multiple departments and team members.
- Able to work in a fast‑paced, detail‑oriented museum environment and respond effectively with flexibility to changing priorities.
- Schedule is set by the supervisor with flexibility for evening and variable hours based on museum need.
- Little to no travel is expected for this position.
- On‑site attendance is essential to perform some duties of this position.
- Occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs., with or without assistance.
- Works in a normal office environment, including prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive wrist and arm movement.
- The ability to focus, bend, carry, reach to the side, front, and overhead, push, pull, walk, stand, twist, and squat, grab, squeeze are repetitive physical requirements of this position.
