Position: Sports Multiplatform Editor at The Seattle Times Seattle, WA

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is seeking a versatile Sports Multiplatform Editor . We’re looking for a sports enthusiast with a stellar understanding of AP style, SEO principles and digital journalism best practices who can exercise excellent news judgment, particularly as relates to coverage of Seattle‑area sports teams. As a sports multiplatform editor, you will copy edit and format stories for The Seattle Times news products with an emphasis on audience engagement.

You’ll help promote sports stories through digital best practices and experiment with innovative ideas. You’ll ensure newsworthy content moves rapidly from initial draft to final product for both web and print — with accuracy, clarity, fairness, grammar and style. You should be comfortable working under tight deadlines while supporting multiple editors ally, you have previous experience (and mastery) with both AP style and knowledge of local geography and nomenclature.

Schedule

Schedule:

This position has a variable schedule throughout the year, with daily shifts typically spanning 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. From August through January, the weekly schedule would be Saturday through Wednesday to support football coverage. From late‑January to mid‑August, the schedule shifts to Friday through Tuesday each week. Applicants may work remotely but must be based in the Puget Sound area.

Responsibilities
  • Curating and producing the  sports homepage.
  • Copy‑editing sports stories for web and print publication.
  • Producing digital news alerts and email newsletters.
  • Writing web headlines with SEO and audience engagement in mind, and when necessary, print headlines that expand on them.
  • Posting Seattle Times stories to social media and engaging with readers.
  • Monitoring trends and readership analytics in real‑time and providing the sports department with relevant information on SEO, trending topics and follow‑up stories based on trending/breaking news.
  • Supporting accurate and timely updates and info during breaking news. This could include a range of responsibilities, including running or contributing to live updates or providing SEO advice to editors.
  • Maintaining a consistently high‑quality product with sharp grammar and unfailing accuracy.
  • Multitasking with the demands of production work — editing on deadline as well as communicating continually on Slack and email.
  • Upholding our ethics code and standards of fairness, independence and inclusion.
  • Staying up to date on digital best practices to optimize our content.

  • Experience :
    At least 1 year experience working on a sports digital or copy desk at a major metro news organization.
  • Education :
    College degree, or equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience
  • Strong copy editing skills
  • Strong interest in and/or familiarity with pro and college sports.
  • Solid news judgment
  • Expertise in digital production
  • Ability to thrive in high‑pressure situations when big news hits
  • Strong communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with tools for web publishing and analytics, such as Word Press, Chartbeat, Google Analytics or Marfeel.
  • Ability to work collaboratively under deadline pressure
  • Ability to respond constructively to direction, suggestions and feedback
  • Predictable and reliable attendance is required for this position.
Compensation

Compensation:
The full salary range for this position is $63,900 to $95,100. We typically pay between $63,900 to $80,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
