Position: General Assignment Reporter

Job Description KUOW has an outstanding opportunity for a General Assignment Reporter [Reporter 2 (NE SAG-AFTRA)] to join their team.

About this Opportunity Reporting to the Afternoon News Editor, the General Assignment Reporter is responsible for regularly contributing to KUOW’s daily news coverage, finding and reporting stories for broadcast and digital audiences. The GA reporter tackles a wide variety of stories: hard news, breaking news, hyperlocal stories, explainers, continuing coverage, profiles, trend stories and occasional enterprise work.

Key Responsibilities

Original reporting – 80% Pitch and take assignments for local news coverage on KUOW 94.9 and KUOW.org Contribute a minimum of 2-3 stories per week Meet daily filing schedule that may require occasional evening and weekend work Respond to breaking news Appear on KUOW broadcast shows and podcasts Build sources and find new voices Use social media as a reporting tool

Station support – 20% May fill in for midday newscaster Participate in fundraising efforts Appear at live events Perform other duties as assigned This position performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department. Bachelor’s degree and five years of professional journalism experience. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience including specific position requirements relating to news writing, radio production and audio editing; or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Track record of producing daily journalism with impact
  • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment
  • Able to work independently, with an editor and with teams
  • Familiarity with and appreciation of public media programming
  • Familiarity with Seattle and Western Washington
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
  • Pay Range Minimum: $87,168.00 annual
  • Pay Range Maximum: $95,016.00 annual
