Position Description

This position is responsible for providing direct student support related to accessibility and disability accommodations within the Office of Disability Services. Under the leadership of the Director, the Disabilities Services Accessibility Specialist meets with students for Access Planning Meetings, reviews accommodation requests and supporting documentation, and approves accommodation requests in consultation with the Director and Executive Director. This position is also responsible for working with students and faculty to ensure campus media and technology formats are accessible to all users.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review accommodation requests, documentation, and accommodation implementation for new and continuing students (45%).
  • Conduct Access Planning meetings with students to determine accommodations.
  • Review disability documentation and determine eligibility and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Orient students to the provision of accommodations and services.
  • Assist students as they navigate the transition to college.
  • Provide individual support for students with disabilities.
  • Act as a liaison between students and faculty; facilitate conversations between faculty and students with understanding multiple needs and perspectives when there are questions about accommodations.
  • Ensure all accommodations and services are in compliance with legal requirements and provide documentation when necessary for compliance purposes.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student accommodations, communications, and related documentation, in compliance with institutional and legal requirements.
  • Provide expert knowledge regarding accommodation strategies in educational settings, disability-based needs, and experiences.
  • Use appropriate professional judgment on when to involve others in complex situations around accommodations and law or policy-based requirements.
Accessible Media and Technology
  • Ensures the inclusion of students with disabilities in academic programs and services by coordinating with faculty and students on the use and provision of alternative media and materials for classroom purposes.
  • Leads coordination and preparation of media and materials in alternative format, manages note taking software, and provides training on alternative technology and direct services to students with disabilities.

Supports coordinators’ implementation of accommodations procedures specifically Accommodated Testing (5%).

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, student development, psychology, or human services related field. Two years of direct experience in college student services, program development and/or direct service in education or social services.
  • Experience with assistive technologies, including software, hardware, and other tools used to support students with disabilities.
  • Experience with current and emerging accessible technology on Apple and PC platforms.
  • High level of appreciation for the impact of disabilities on the experience of students in higher education and for disability culture(s).
  • Understanding of disability issues, including the ability to review disability documentation for legal and policy compliance and to determine reasonable accommodation on that basis.
