Position Summary / Overview:

The Bush School is searching for an individual to join our Middle School team as an English faculty member. The ideal candidate will support the school’s mission of diversity and inclusion and demonstrate intercultural fluency. Diversity of experience, background, and talent is valued in working with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and families.

The Middle School English Faculty member reports to the Middle School Director, works closely with students, families, and fellow teachers, and actively participates in the English Department. Responsibilities include teaching four sections of English, hosting a student advisory group, and delivering experiential programs (E‑lectives and E‑Week).

General Responsibilities:
  • Create and sustain a positive classroom culture based on the mission and values of the school.
  • Employ developmentally appropriate teaching methods, materials, and workload expectations for middle‑school students.
  • Develop curriculum that incorporates project‑based, inquiry‑based, and student‑centered learning techniques.
  • Maintain broad and deep content knowledge that is curated and made accessible to students.
  • Stay current with emerging content in the field of English.
  • Enhance curriculum and student engagement with relevant lessons, guided practice and age‑appropriate technologies.
  • Support students in developing effective English habits, content knowledge and skills.
  • Enrich or modify lessons, curriculum, materials, and resources to meet differentiated student needs and varying levels of progress.
  • Teach English to middle‑school students with interest, ability, and skill.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of middle‑school students.
  • Lead E‑lectives throughout the academic year.
  • Design and lead an E‑Week program each academic year.
  • Value and incorporate diverse perspectives in daily interactions and within the curriculum.
  • Build a culturally responsive, student‑centered community that fosters engagement, inquiry, risk‑taking and confidence.
  • Establish classroom expectations creating a safe and comfortable environment for all students.
  • Share expertise to benefit the school institutionally.
  • Collaborate on common student‑inquiry experiences with other English faculty.
  • Work with counselors and learning specialists to support social‑emotional learning and wellness for all students.
  • Plan lessons and resources to serve students with different learning profiles and mental health needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and areas of growth.
  • Attend and chaperone school‑related events outside the scheduled school day.
  • Communicate openly, timely, and supportively with students, staff, parents, and stakeholders regarding student achievement and progress.
  • Create effective family partnerships ensuring all families are seen and heard.
  • Participate actively in meetings and student community gatherings during the school day.
  • Use technology to support student success (e.g., Google Docs, Google Classroom).
  • Conscientiously complete other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Training &

Experience:
  • Experience teaching English is required, with 3 or more years preferred.
  • Experience teaching middle‑school students is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in English, English‑focused teaching, or related field is required.
  • A graduate degree in the same area is preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence as an English educator with a passion for sharing that with students is required.
  • Commitment to professional development and growth in this area is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Familiarity with current learning theories and basic principles of human growth and development, and ability to integrate them into learning experiences.
  • Knowledge of current trends and research in learning and assessment.
  • Ability to manage classroom dynamics positively and productively.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to meet the needs of children and the program.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
