Are you looking for a flexible, part time job where you can be involved directly with events happening in your community? The City of Des Moines is looking to hire multiple Facility Attendants and a Lead Facility Attendant.

We are ramping up for the Summer Season of 2026! May through September hours for these positions range from 20-40 per week.

Under the general supervision of the Community Enrichment Program Support Supervisor, the Facility Attendant is responsible for the care and control of multi-purpose around the City of Des Moines. Maintains all amenities, provides customer service, facility monitoring and security, and custodial/maintenance. This position will be working private events such as weddings, birthday parties, graduation parties and corporate events as well as a variety of public community events for the city that involve seniors, families and youth.

The Community Enrichment Department oversees events and facilities as well as parks and recreation programs for the surrounding community. Apply Today!

Ranges from $17.24 - $26.71 (DOE)

Work Hours

These are extra-hire positions with no benefits except those mandated by law or regulations. Hours vary and include primarily late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Generally, from October through May, the hours range from 0 to 15 per week; during the high season, June through September, the hours range from 20 to 40 per week.

Job Classifications

Facility Attendants are part of the Program Leader classification. They are flexibly staffed and includes four levels (I-IV), with assignments and responsibilities increasing in scope and independence at each level. All Program Leaders support programming and operations in areas such as recreation, childcare, youth activities, senior programs, special events, and facility rentals.

  • Program Leader I - Entry-level position. Assists with basic activity support, participant supervision, site setup and cleanup, and customer service. Works under direct supervision and follows established routines. Typically assigned to support roles.
  • Program Leader II - Performs all duties of a Program Leader I with additional responsibility for independently leading activities or small groups, enforcing rules, and supporting routine site operations with minimal supervision. May assist with training new staff or serving as a lead for short shifts.
  • Program Leader III - Provides on-site leadership for assigned programs or facilities. Acts as the primary point of contact during scheduled shifts, provides guidance to Program Leader I and II staff, and completes site documentation such as attendance and incident reports. May assist with coordinating day-to-day operations, resolving customer issues, and communicating with supervisors.
  • Program Leader IV (Lead Facility Attendant) - Assigned to support large, high-traffic programs or serve as a float or coordinator across multiple sites. Provides guidance to staff, ensures compliance with program standards, and addresses operational issues in real time. May assist with scheduling, site coverage, supply management, or staff onboarding support. May be required to drive a City vehicle as part of site coordination or to support off-site programs, field trips, or supply distribution.

Education and Experience Requirements

Program Leader I

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be currently enrolled in, or on legitimate leave from, a high school, trade school, college, or university; OR

Program Leader II

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year of experience as a Program Leader I or equivalent experience in recreation, childcare, customer service, or facility support: OR
