Site DescriptionThe Maya Angelou Academy at the DC Department of Corrections is an alternative school that serves incarcerated men and women aged 18‑22 with individualized education plans. Located within the Central Treatment Facility, the school also supports students housed in the Central Detention Facility. Designed to meet the unique needs of justice‑involved students requiring special education, the academy provides educational opportunities regardless of their academic history or current standing.
Position OverviewThe CTE Technology Instructor provides instruction in foundational and emerging technology skills to adult scholars residing in an adult correctional facility. This role focuses on equipping adult scholars with practical, workforce‑aligned competencies, including digital literacy, digital citizenship, keyboarding, basic computer operations, and introductory concepts in artificial intelligence (AI). The instructor designs and delivers instruction that leads to industry‑recognized microcredentials, preparing adult scholars for successful reentry into school, training programs, or available post‑secondary opportunities.
The role requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering instructional strategies to meet adult scholars' needs.
Deliver instruction in digital literacy, keyboarding, productivity tools, digital citizenship, and AI basics. Adapt curriculum for high‑mobility student populations. Use project‑based and competency‑based learning. Facilitate multi‑grade, multi‑content coursework for scholars in their units. Ensure timely delivery and grading of lessons. Adapt lessons to accommodate varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels of scholars.
Classroom ManagementMaintain a positive, structured learning environment for all scholars. Use restorative practices to support the academic and behavioral growth of scholars.
Prepare students for industry‑recognized microcredentials. Track progress toward credential attainment. Embed career readiness and workforce skills.
Use approved technology platforms. Manage school equipment and ensure responsible use.
Collaboration, Support, and GuidanceWork closely with colleagues, leadership, and correctional staff to ensure delivery of a well‑rounded educational program. Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns. Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements.
Compliance and ReportingEnsure high‑quality instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations. Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines.
Other Duties as AssignedTasks that may not directly align with your job description but are vital and serve to maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment for scholars and staff.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in education or related subject field (strongly preferred)
- Industry experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
- Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment)
- Experience teaching technology or digital literacy and various platforms (MS Office, Google, digital music, and/or digital arts)
- Experience working with adult students (preferred)
