Job Overview

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at the University of Washington (UW) invites applications for a full‑time tenure‑track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. Exceptional candidates with demonstrated leadership in Systems Engineering will also be considered for Associate Professor.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses in Systems Engineering and to establish internationally recognized, externally funded research programs that address critical societal and industrial challenges. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, Model‑Based Systems Engineering, Digital Twins, Cyber‑Physical Systems, Autonomous Systems, Physical AI, AI‑Enabled Systems Engineering, Human–Systems Integration, Human–Autonomy Teaming, and System‑of‑Systems Engineering.

Candidates will also contribute to departmental, university, and professional service by developing and growing Systems Engineering programs and initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and building strong partnerships with industry, government agencies, and academic institutions.

This position is a 9‑month service period with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2027. The base salary range is $12,000–$17,000 per month for a 9‑month service period, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation may include a one‑time relocation incentive. This is a full‑time appointment.

The ISE Department currently supports more than 270 undergraduate and over 110 graduate students and is on a multi‑year trajectory of growth with a rapidly expanding Systems Engineering Program.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Systems Engineering, Systems Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline by the position start date.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and research in the areas of Systems Engineering listed above.
  • Evidence of research productivity and ability to secure external funding.
  • Commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.
